Analysis
Syracuse has a modest 6-3 record, but the Orange have a win over a top 20 team in Tennessee while all three losses came against top 20 teams away from home. Losing by 31 to Iowa State hurts the statistical profile for the Orange but that was a third game in three days in Las Vegas in an event that started with an overtime game for the Orange. Iowa State is 10-0 And also beat top ranked Purdue by 23 points as well. Syracuse played Thursday with an 8-point home win over St. Joseph’s following more than a week off, with a bit of a flat start in that contest while also missing 13 free throws. This matchup should get the team’s full attention facing another New York state school and knowing Hofstra beat fellow ACC team Pittsburgh on the road last weekend. That was the best win for the 7-4 Pride who have shown some inconsistency in their offense. Pittsburgh already has five losses as the Panthers may be in another season of decline, however. Hofstra has won a few games away from home, but Syracuse presents an elite defense, 10th in the nation in effective field goal rate against this season. Hofstra struggled with turnovers while Syracuse has been very effective at creating turnovers. The Orange have struggled with free throws and 3-point shooting, but the offense is an efficient inside scoring team and will have a clear size edge in this pairing as 3-point shooting and free throws haven’t been a big component of the team’s scoring on the way to 6-3. Syracuse has already played two CAA teams and produced wins in both games by a combined margin of 35 points. Hofstra’s solid defensive profile has been built on limiting interior scoring, but what was a weakness for Pittsburgh is a strength for Syracuse as the Orange should be a threat to pull away for a comfortable result. Thank you for playing with Nelly’s and Best of Luck.
