It might be a long year in Washington State’s first year under new head coach Jimmy Rogers. After two years as the head coach at South Dakota State, the Cougars hired him after the previous head coach, Jake Dickert, left to take the job at Wake Forest. Many of the expected returning players also left the program, including quarterback John Mateer, who transferred to Oklahoma. Rogers only had three starters on offense and no returning starters on defense to begin building this roster. He began the rebuild by bringing sixteen players with him from South Dakota State. He brought with him his coordinators from that program. There are over 70 new players in the program. They seemed to have gotten a light early test last week against a depleted Idaho team from the FCS. Yet the Cougars only won that game by a 13-10 score and got outgained by 10 yards. They only earned thirteen first downs in the game, getting bested by the Vandals by three in that statistic. South Dakota State’s identity on offense emphasized a power running game with mobile quarterbacks. Rogers’ quarterback room does not have a player with great running skills. Redshirt sophomore Jaxon Potter was named the starter. He completed 23 of 30 passes for 208 yards, yet he only ran the ball twice for two yards. The Cougars ran the ball 22 times, yet only managed three net yards on the ground, including the quarterback sack yardage. Their non-sack yardage was only 22 yards from 21 rushing attempts, so it was meager and not like Rogers’ teams. It’s not a great fit between the talent on the roster and the coaching philosophies. Washington State has covered the point spread in six of its last sixteen games when the oddsmakers installed them as a favorite.
San Diego State began the second year under head coach Sean Lewis with a dominant 42-0 victory against Stony Brook. While the Aztecs did not face much of a challenge, they thoroughly dominated their FCS opponent by gaining 553 yards and holding them to 95 yards. Lewis expects a big improvement on defense this year with ten starters back. The former Kent State head coach, known for his Flash Fast up-tempo offense, has three starters back. He calls the plays. He brought in sophomore Jayden Denegal from Michigan in the transfer portal to run his offense. He completed 13 of 25 passes for 207 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions in a steady opening effort. The playbook should open more tonight for the Aztec Fast attack. San Diego State only had three home games in conference play last year. They got accustomed to playing on the road, where they have covered the point spread in seven of their last eleven games. They have covered the point spread in five of their last seven games on the road when the oddsmakers installed the over/under from 42.5 to 49. In Lewis’ head coaching career, his teams have covered the point spread in seven of their eleven games when the oddsmakers installed them as an underdog of up to three points or as a favorite of up to three points. Play San Diego State plus the points.
Good luck - Team Del Genio.
