- #924 PADRES with Cease (-) over Orioles with Bradish at 6:40 PM EST
Off yesterday's 7-2 road loss to the Twins and with blemishes in three of their last four, the Padres will return home to PETCO Park and do a number on the visiting Orioles. San Diego is now resting 2.0-games back in the NL West race and the Friars need this dub to keep pace in the division.
Right-hander Dylan Cease will hit the hill for the home team. With 27 starts completed, No. 84 has surrendered 76 earned runs and 128 hits in 142.0 innings of work. Dylan fanned 183 and issued 61 free passes on his way to a 6-11 record with a 4.82 ERA. In five August outings, Cease allowed just 13 earned runs and 17 hits in 23.2 frames. That's good enough for a 3-1 record with a 4.94 ERA.
Picking up the pearl for the visitors will be right-hander Kyle Bradish. In just his first start back from Tommy John surgery, No. 38 faced the BoSox and was clipped for two earned runs and four hits in 6.0 innings of work. Kyle was hit with the loss as he fanned 10 and issued no free passes in that performance. In his four-year career, Bradish has made 62 total starts and has been popped for 131 earned runs and 282 hits in 331.2 innings of work. That translates into a 18-15 record with a 3.55 ERA.
Several profitable angles back this interleague investment. San Diego has tasted victory in 43 of its last 65 at home, 47 of its last 73 when facing an opponent that carries a team won/loss percentage less than .500, and 34 of its last 60 when coming off a loss. On the other side of the chalk line, Baltimore has fallen in 48 of its last 79 under the lights, 23 of its last 39 against National League foes, and 39 of its last 69 on the road.
The Friars next 13 games are against opponents that own a team won/loss percentage of .510 or less and they need to make them all count. Take San Diego with Cease. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
