- Analysis
- Yusei Kikuchi has dominant numbers in Anaheim this season with a 1.98 ERA in 59 innings of work. While Kikuchi has just four wins this season, he has proven to be worth the investment so far posting a 3.13 ERA with good strikeout numbers to keep the Angels relevant and his past home run issues haven’t been present this season. Kikuchi started his MLB career with Seattle, and he owns a 0.39 ERA in four starts facing his former team since leaving the Mariners in 2022. Seattle sits six games above .500 to maintain a wild card position in the American League, though the Mariners are only +17 in run differential this season. Seattle has a below .500 record since early May as a great month of April is the difference in season ledger for the Mariners. Seattle has scored just six runs combined the past four days in going 1-3 after two wins out of the break and the Mariners are 10-14 in the past 24 road games. Neither bullpen has performed well in recent games but the numbers for the Mariners are worse with a 5.75 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP in the past 10 games. The Mariners are also batting just .194 vs. left-handed pitching in the past 10 games while the Angels are batting .289 vs. right-handers. 24-year-old rookie Logan Evans has a 3.81 ERA in 10 starts for the Mariners as a fill-in starter. His FIP is 4.88 however and he has a 6.6 K/9 while being a home run risk, surrendering nine home runs in just over 54 innings. Like just about every Seattle pitcher, Evans has good home splits with a 2.60 ERA at T-Mobile, but Evans has allowed 20 runs in just over 26 innings on the road for a 5.06 ERA with his opponents’ batting .345 with a .969 OPS against him. Evans has never pitched at Angel Stadium and even in a blowout loss the Mariners had to use three relievers to get through yesterday’s game and the bullpen has Collin Snider on the IL right now while Matt Brash has allowed runs in two of his three outings since the break. After a tough sweep losing three straight close games in Queens vs. the Mets the Angels face a key home stand with seven straight division games in the next week with the Angels still just five games out of the final AL wild card spot. The Angels are 14-8 at home since June 1 and this should be a favorable matchup and set-up for Los Angeles to get back in the win column.
