- Analysis
- At 8:00 PM ET on Tuesday, we will be playing Under the Total in the All-Star Game between the National League (947) and the American League (948). THE SITUATION: The American League won last year’s All-Star Game by a 5-3 score. The National League won the previous year by a 3-2 score — but that was after losing the previous nine Midsummer Classics. This year’s game is being played at the home of the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia.
REASONS TO TAKE UNDER THE TOTAL: Despite the eight combined runs scored last year, since 2008, 11 of the last 16 Midsummer Classics have seen seven or fewer combined runs scored after the National League’s victory last summer. The American League won the 2018 All-Star Game by an 8-6 score in what was an outlier regarding the number of runs scored. Since then, there had been four straight All-Star Games with seven or fewer combined runs scored before last year. Frankly, while this trend may be enough for me to consider the Under, it is not enough evidence. Analytics has influenced the strategy regarding how pitching coaches are training pitchers — and this game presents the ultimate showcase for how effective these changes have been. With six starting pitchers and five relievers available for the American League and six starting pitchers and six relievers on the National League roster, both managers have the ultimate bullpen at their disposal. Pitching coaches want their pitchers to throw as hard as possible. No longer is John Smoltz taking a little less off his four-seamer to save some energy to pitch later in the game. Relievers are specialists with limited pitch counts. Except for perhaps the starting pitchers Tarik Skubal and Paul Skenes (who are two of the top five starters in MLB), managers Dave Roberts and Aaron Boone will not ask any of their pitchers to throw more than one inning. It used to be that the starting pitchers would pitch two to three innings. Just checking the 1994 All-Star Game, Greg Maddux pitched the first three innings for the National League in that game. In the 2007 game that preceded this 11-4 Under run, the AL started Dan Haren who pitched two innings before Tim Beckett entered the game to pitch another two innings. But the last time a starting pitcher was used for more than one inning was 2018 when Max Scherzer pitched two innings for the National League (and that game finished Over the Total). So all these pitchers are going to throw heat and not be asked to pitch more than one inning. I do not think it is a coincidence that scoring is down in the Midsummer Classic.
FINAL TAKE: With both managers having a bevy of elite relief pitchers at their disposal, it will be difficult for either team to enjoy a big inning. Both managers can also hide the not-so-premier starting pitchers in relief roles facing only the minimum number of batters. The bullpen guys for both teams are studs. The AL can turn to Bryan Woo, Joe Ryan, and Carlos Rodon to get into the second half of the game. The NL has Logan Webb, Mackenzie Gore, Andrew Abbott, and the new hotshot Jacob Misiorowski before leaning on the relievers. 10* MLB Tuesday All-Star Game Fox-TV O/U Special with Under the Total in All-Star Game between the National League (947) and the American League (948). Best of luck for us — Frank.
