- #952 PHILLIES RUN LINE with Wheeler (-) over Padres with Waldron at 6:30 PM EST
Off a victory at Atlanta and six consecutive road games, Philadelphia will return home and knock off this struggling San Diego squad. The Padres dropped two of three on foreign soil to the Reds and this will be a tough encore for manager Mike Shildt and his crew.
Picking up the pearl for the home squad will be veteran right-hander Zack Wheeler. With 16 starts in the books this season, No. 45 was clipped for only 27 earned runs and 66 hits in 99.0 innings of work. Zach fanned 126 and issued 25 free passes on his way to a solid 7-3 record with an elite 2.45 ERA. Even better, in four June performances versus the Astros, Mets, Blue Jays, and Cubs, Wheeler was nicked for just two earned runs and 14 hits in 23.0 frames. After the math, that adds up to a 1-1 tally with a stunning 0.78 ERA.
Making his first start of the season for the visitors will be right-hander Matt Waldron. For the past three months, No. 61 has been on the shelf with an oblique strain. With 35 career performances completed including 32 starts, Waldron was waxed for 100 earned runs and 184 hits in 188.0 innings. Matt whiffed 164 and walked 52 on his way to a 8-14 mark with a 4.79 ERA.
On a statistical note, the Phillies offense has been solid this season averaging 4.60 runs per game and holding a batting average of .255 and they'll have no trouble plating runs matched up against a Padres squad that has allowed an average of 4.67 runs per game over their last six battles. Additionally, the Friars have been at their absolute worst against winning teams this season dropping 28 of their last 43 overall.
With the Mets just 1.5-games behind the Phillies for the top spot in the division, manager Rob Thomson will have his troops crank their game up a notch with one of the NL West's better teams in town. Take Philadelphia on the run line with Wheeler. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
