Jets - Maple Leafs preview, prediction and analysis

Recent results
Jets: lost 4-1 at Canadiens
Maple Leafs: won 5-4 (OT) vs. Panthers

The Winnipeg Jets will be playing the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday, January 19 in Toronto.

The Winnipeg Jets lost against the Montreal Canadiens last Tuesday, January 17 in Montreal with a score of 4-1. The Winnipeg Jets currently rank 1st in the Central Division. Kyle Connor scored his 200th NHL goal, and Connor Hellebuyck made 24 saves for Winnipeg, which won its previous three games and eight of 10.

"We weren't skating," Jets coach Rick Bowness said. "Our legs weren't going, our compete wasn't good, our execution was way off. So there are very few games that we're going to walk out of a rink and say that we didn't deserve to win, but that's certainly one tonight.

"We didn't deserve to win that game. We were outplayed. We were behind them all night, made it very easy for them to play their game. So when the compete isn't there, and the legs aren't there and the execution isn't there, then you look bad. We looked bad."

Connor gave Winnipeg a 1-0 lead at 1:24 of the second period with a one-timer from the right face-off circle on a power play before Dadonov tied it 1-1 at 7:46, scoring on a one-timer after receiving a pass from Barron at the bottom of the right circle.

"We weren't able to connect on a lot of plays," Connor said. "We were kind of disjointed throughout the whole ice, all three zones, not one zone in particular. They were able to counter on us pretty good, catch us on some bad changes. We just weren't taking care of each other tonight."

Winnipeg has continued to be one of the bigger surprises of the season, hence their 8-2 mark on the money line in the last 10 games. That loss to Montreal was only the second in five games outside of that Detroit game on Jan. 10. They have the ultimate formula that can win a lot of games for them come spring time. Whether it’s sustainable remains to be seen, but it’s something to watch.

The Toronto Maple leafs won against the Florida Panthers last Tuesday, January 17 in Toronto with a score of 5-4 in overtime. The Toronto Maple Leafs currently rank 2nd in the Atlantic Division. William Nylander scored at 1:53 of overtime after tying the game in the third period to give the Toronto Maple Leafs a 5-4 win against the Florida Panthers. After Aleksander Barkov scored putting the Florida Panthers 4-2 in the second period, Maple Leafs goalie Matt Murray was pulled.

"That's a big time shot by Barkov, but for me, I'm more pulling the goaltender for our team," Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe said. "Just needed to change something. You can't give up four goals on eight shots no matter how you shake it out, but that was really it. You look at the actual goals, I didn't think any of the goals were too egregious or weak. There was some traffic involved inside each of those goals, but clearly we needed to change something."

You wouldn’t think Toronto would have been able to pull something out in that win over the Panthers after pulling Murray for Samsonov, but they somehow did. This has been a weird stretch for the Maple Leafs and I’m not sure what they’re doing is sustainable, but it’s going to be a weird sprint to the finish line.

Prediction

The favorite is 5-1 in the last six meetings, but the road team has won seven of the last 10. It’s going to come down to goaltending and if Hellebuyck does his thing, it’ll be a tough go for the Maple Leafs. Jets 4, Maple Leafs 2

Betting trends

Maple Leafs are 1-4 in their last five after scoring 5 goals or more last game.

Maple Leafs are 7-2 in their last nine against the Central.
