What an electric start to the NHL season. So much parity, so many good teams through the first 10-plus games, you have every right to be excited! Of course the Vegas Golden Knights and Boston Bruins are heading the fun charge here as the top two teams in the league, because of course they are. But never count out the Avalanche, you know they're always going to be hanging around and will be eating worlds once they get everyone healthy. Jets - Kraken preview, prediction and analysis

Recent results
Jets: lost 3-2 at Flames on Saturday
Kraken: lost 1-0 vs. Wild on Friday

These kinds of games are always fun. The teams off decent winning streaks and are coming off a loss in their previous game. Who is for real? I’m not sure if we’ll get to that answer on Sunday when the Seattle Kraken host the Winnipeg Jets, but it’ll at least create some intrigue for the Western Conference this week.

The Kraken just had their franchise record five-game winning streak end on Friday in a 1-0 loss against the Minnesota Wild. The Kraken hit a wall named Marc-Andre Fleury and couldn’t overcome the play from the future hall-of-famer. It wasn’t until Mats Zuccarello eventually beat Martin Jones that turned the tide. Seattle had 10 games straight of scoring three goals or more before that one.

"Both teams do a pretty good job of limiting opportunities and they found one off a turnover in the first period," Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said. "We didn't get enough from the inside. In the third, we had three or four good looks from inside and just couldn't find one off a rebound. We couldn't find a way to get one in behind, so it's that kind of night, you know? We've got to find a dirty one, a greasy one somewhere, and we weren't able to do that tonight."

Seattle has exceeded all expectations over the past few weeks and has given that home crowd something to look forward to. Whether the Kraken can compete with the contenders in the West remain to be seen, but the Jets are on a roll that shows they will be a tough out for the Kraken.

The Jets, however, will be playing the second night of a back-to-back after losing 3-2 to the Calgary Flames on Saturday. The Jets made the tough call to play Connor Hellebuyck in this matchup against a struggling Flames team rather than keep him for a contending Seattle group. Hellebuyck made 32 saves in the loss, the Jets’ first without a point in eight games.

Neal Pionk had two points, and Pierre-Luc Dubois also had a goal for Winnipeg. The Jets have had some struggles lately with coach Rick Bowness going in and out of COVID protocol, but they’ve been finding ways to win. This one, against the Flames, was a sign they couldn’t win them all.

"Can't win every game," Dubois said. "It's a frustrating loss. We had a good streak going, not just points-wise, but we were playing well, too, and playing the right way, and I think tonight at times we played well, and at other times we were trying to force it a little bit too much."

It didn’t help matters that the Jets were held to just four shots in the third and now have to carry that on a back-to-back. I’d venture to guess that this couldn’t be a good sign, especially now that David Rittich has to play this one.

Prediction

This is a good opportunity for Seattle to handle adversity. The Kraken have a talented group, but now it’s a chance to see how they handle a loss after when good things were going. This is a good chance for Seattle to take advantage of a weakened team. Kraken win 5-3
