Season Record

Western Carolina: 0-0 conf, 1-1 overall (Southern)
East Carolina:  0-0 conf, 2-0 overall (American Athletic Conference)

The Western Carolina Catamounts tipped off the season on Tuesday Nov 9th with a win over Bowling Green 79-71 and then a loss on Friday to Wake Forest 87-75.  Early on in the college basketball season there should be a feeling out process to see if this season’s Catamounts can improve on last season’s 4-13 conference record and 11-16 overall record.  On defense WCU is holding their own playing close against Wake forest and averaging 40 rebounds a game for 67th in college basketball.

East Carolina opened the college basketball season on Tuesday Nov 9th with a win over SC State 70-62 and then an easy win over Canisius 83-71.  East Carolina needs to skip any feeling out process and simply get wins.  The Pirates finished last season in last place in the American Athletic Conference.  They went 2-10 conference and 8-11 overall.  They were doormats.  ECU needs every easy victory it can get…. The only problem is they are in a conference with some real teams; SMU, Memphis, Houston, Wichita State, and Cincinnati.  They need a win over WCU before they face Oklahoma on Thursday.

Catamounts vs Pirates Preview and Analysis

Recent Form
WCU has gone 2-0 ATS (both as an underdog) this season.  They have logged 1 Over and 1 Under.

ECU has gone 1-1 ATS.  Logging 1 Over and 1 Under.  They were big favorites against South Carolina State, but South Carolina State made a game of it and nearly got the upset.

Offensive Analysis

Western Carolina on offense is tied for 137th in the nation in points scored per game 77.  It is early yet, but they have found a dominant scorer in Tra’Vion McCray.  Tra’Vion is a 6’1 Junior Guard who has grinded his way up through the WCU depth chart since he was a Freshman.

ECU is tied for 146th in the nation is scoring with 76.5 per game.  ECU does not have a dominant scorer in the bunch yet, they seem to spread it around.  These numbers are phony of course as they have played NOBODY of any quality. Apologies to SC State and Canisius, but they are on the schedule for a reason.

COACHES:

WCU:  Justin Gray.  Coach Gray is in his first season as the Catamounts head coach.  He had a successful 12 years playing career professionally overseas and has worked on the staffs at his alma mater Wake Forest and as an assistant coach at Winthrop University.  He will work hard and fast to turn this program around.

ECU:  Joe Dooley.  Coach Dooley is in his 4th season (this time) as the ECU Pirates Head Coach.  They haven’t been fun seasons.  A deadly worldwide pandemic, a small school with limited resources and of course… lots of losing.  This isn’t new territory for Coach Dooley as he was also the ECU head coach way back in 1995-1999.  His career record at ECU (both stints combined) is 86-104… That isn’t terrible if you remember that in order to find a head coach at ECU with a winning record during their stay you have to go all the way back to Earl Smith who coached 1945-1946, and again 1959-1963.
