The Nationals are 3-7 in their last ten games of MLB action.  Logging 7 Overs and 3 Unders.  They went 1-2 against the Milwaukee Brewers, 2-0 against the Toronto Blue Jays, 0-3 to the Atlanta Braves, and 0-2 against the New York Mets.  This is a team all over the map… losing to the Mets but beating the Blue Jays is bizarre considering the qualifying hitters in each of those matchups.  But trading away Max Scherzer and Trea Turner was a clear signal that he rest of this season means nothing to the organization and it will be up to the players to buck the MLB odds and get the occasional win.

The Marlins are also 3-7 over their last ten games.  They logged 5 Unders and 5 Overs.  They got swept by the Cincinnati Reds 0-4 in a series that started Thursday and punished them all through the weekend, then got swept 0-3 by the Atlanta Braves to help reach this current 7 game losing streak they are on, and they beat the Chicago Cubs 3-0 at Wrigley Field.  This team is nose diving to the season's end.

This pitchers matchup is all about underdogs.  The stats say neither of these guys are great or really any good… Neither will ever lead the league in strikeouts… Current betting odds (for entertainment purposes) favors neither team. As pitcher projections go this is a coin flip and we have to look at things like Nationals batting stats, Marlins stats, OBP rank, bullpen avg, for any accuracy in prediction.

The Nationals will give the starting nod to right-hander Erick Fedde 5-8, 5.14 ERA, 87 strikeouts in 96 innings pitched at 1.43 WHIP, giving the Marlins batting stats a chance at finally trending up. The nationals’ Fedde is pitching 6.25 ERA over his last 7 games. He lost his last outing and  never fills his opponents with fear.  He is a soup can, team-high in no stats I can find.  A bookmakers dream unless he is playing someone worse.

The projected starting pitcher for the Marlins is far from a fantasy baseball dream… unless your fantasy squad is heavy with Nationals offense. The Marlins will start left-hander Jesus Luzardo 4-6, 7.76 ERA, 57 strikeouts in 55 innings pitched, 1.78 WHIP.  Is Jesus someone worse? Could Miami’s batting benefit from this being a home game?
