Washington - Oregon preview, analysis and prediction

Last week
Washington: won 24-21 vs. No. 23 Oregon State
Oregon: won 49-10 at Colorado

The Oregon Ducks are sitting pretty. If they run the table and win the Pac-12 championship, they’re more than likely heading to the College Football Playoff. With Bo Nix at quarterback, of all things. Name me something more crazier than that. But Oregon will have to face one of its tougher tests of the season on Saturday at home when the No. 25 Washington Huskies visit Eugene fresh off a three-game winning streak.

Ever since their Week 1 loss to Georgia, it’s been all Nix and the Ducks through the last two months. Eight straight wins and suddenly Oregon is now at the top of the standings with a College Football Playoff spot staring them in the face. The No. 6 Ducks are coming off a 49-10 win at Colorado last week. That’s not surprising, because Colorado is the definition of garbage this season, but Nix has continued to keep his tear going.

Nix threw for 274 yards and two touchdowns on 20 of 24 passing, while Bucky Irving chipped in with 120 yards on 11 carries. The Ducks outgained the Buffaloes 479-367 in a shock to absolutely no one, and Oregon forced three turnovers.

“When you’re a team that’s complete and you’re hard to predict, it’s harder to really prepare for you,” said Oregon coach Dan Lanning. “For us, they're not really trick plays when you execute them consistently in practice."

Since the 49-3 loss to Gerogia, Nix has thrown 22 touchdowns to just 3 interceptions. Two of them came in one game against Cal, so he’s pitched a lot of shutouts to this point against teams that can’t compete with Oregon. That’s why this quarterback battle is going to be exquisite, featuring two signal callers who have been two of the best all year.

Since losing to UCLA and Arizona State in a horrendous way, Washington has answered with three straight wins against Arizona, Cal and No. 23 Oregon State by a combined 20 points. Washington won 24-21 at home against the Beavers to give the upstart OSU club a tough loss.

Michael Penix Jr. threw 52 times, but had 298 yards and a touchdown – along with an interception – to get the win, and Damien Martinez ran for 107 yards on the ground. But Washington led a game-winning drive that led to a 22-yard field goal to end things.

"We knew if we gave them the ball back we probably wouldn't have got it back," Penix said. "We wanted to make sure that we took advantage of that drive and make sure we got down there and got some points on the board. And it was great that we took up all that clock."

Prediction

While that’s a tough 3-point win over Oregon State, this is a Washington team that has shown to be inconsistent at times and there’s really no way to say that the Huskies can handle an Oregon team this talented on the road. Nix will have his way against a really on-and-off defense and find his way to Oregon getting win No. 9. Oregon by 14
