Villanova - Georgetown preview, analysis and prediction

After a stunning loss on Wednesday, look for the Villanova Wildcats to bounce back and handle the struggling Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday.

Villanova is coming off a 57-54 loss to the Marquette Golden Eagles at home to end a six-game winning streak that offset a rough 7-4 start. The biggest difference was Marquette hitting 13 3-pointers, including the game-winner from Justin Lewis with 11.5 seconds left to end Villanova’s 29-game home winning streak.

"They hit a lot of timely 3s," Villanova coach Jay Wright said. "The last one being the most timely."

Despite that tough loss, Villanova is 6-2 in Big East play and in a bunch with Xavier, UConn and Marquette for that 2-5 area. The Providence Friars are the group everyone’s looking up at the top.

Eric Dixon finished with 15 points, and Justin Moore had 13 points on 13 shots, as Villanova had an off night to make only 37.9 percent of its shots. Leading scorer Collin Gillespie had only 10 points while also taking 13 shots.

In short, no one should really be expecting this type of sharp decline for more than one game. Maybe in non-conference play, but Villanova has found a groove.

The Wildcats are catching the Hoyas at the right time, as well. Georgetown has lost five in a row after winning three straight against Howard, Syracuse and UMBC. But GU has also dropped its first four Big East games with the most recent coming Thursday in an 83-75 loss to Providence; which surprisingly enough was the closest loss of the bunch.

Georgetown was 9.5-point dogs and covered for the first time in five games.

“I didn’t think it took a lot out of us," Georgetown coach Patrick Ewing said. “We started out slow unfortunately, but we fought back and cut it to three at halftime.”

This won’t take much for Villanova to handle. For as much as Georgetown will always have a spirited play about them with Ewing as the coach, there aren’t many guards that can slow down Gillespie and play the defense Marquette did. If you don’t think Wright can improve off a game like that, you haven’t watched Villanova the past few seasons. Villanova by 15
