Golden Knights - Rangers preview, prediction and analysis

The Vegas Golden Knights will be playing the New York Rangers on Friday, January 27 in New York.

The Vegas Golden Knights lost against the New Jersey Devils last Tuesday, January 24 at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey with a score of 3-2 in overtime. The Vegas Golden Knights currently rank 1st in the Pacific Division.

Ben Hutton and William Karlsson scored for the Golden Knights (29-17-3), who have lost six of eight (2-5-1). Logan Thompson made 33 saves.

"They score in the first four minutes of the game and the last minute, so that's on me," Thompson said. "I've got to be better."

Palat gave New Jersey a 1-0 lead at 3:58 of the first period when he took a shot from the edge of the right circle that deflected off the stick of Vegas defenseman Kaedan Korczak and over Thompson's glove.

The Devils outshot the Golden Knights 4-0 in overtime.

"I haven't been good in my last 10 games," Thompson said. "I've got to start winning hockey [games]. That's what I'm here to do, and I haven't done my job. I can make the save on all those goals."

For as rough as Thompson was on himself, he can't after that performance against the Devils. Thompson carried that team as far as he could go. But with the Golden Knights now getting Shea Theodore back in the lineup, that has to bode well for this team that has been in need of serious depth help.

The New York Rangers lost against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday, January 25 at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto with a score of 3-2 in overtime. The New York Rangers currently rank 3rd in the Metropolitan Division.

Filip Chytil scored twice, and Igor Shesterkin made 32 saves for the Rangers (26-14-8), who are 3-0-3 in their past six road games.

"They're a really good team," New York coach Gerard Gallant said. "They're really talented and when they're losing they're going to push, so they made a good play and they attacked and they got a goal. But no, I liked the game. I thought we played well in a tough building with a real good team against us. … I want the two points, but we'll take the one and run."

Chytil tied it 1-1 at 2:11 of the second period, scoring directly off an offensive-zone face-off from the left circle. He then gave New York a 2-1 lead at 6:31 on a one-timer after receiving a pass from Kaapo Kakko at the bottom of the right circle.

"I thought tonight was a really good effort," Rangers forward Jimmy Vesey said. "Maybe if we win the game 2-1, we are applauding our 60-minute effort and our defensive game. But in overtime, anything can happen.

"But for the most part, I thought our intensity and our checking was there. I'm not saying we didn't give them anything, but we held their top guys pretty much in check and overall, it was a hard-fought game tonight. Just a good hockey game so if we come out with two points, then we are talking about that as a really good measuring stick game."

The New York Rangers have won six of their last 10 games.

Prediction

The Golden Knights appear to be getting healthy at the right time. Is it enough? I'd expect Thompson to get back into form for this one with Adin Hill going on Saturday against the Islanders, but Vegas needs a strong finish. Golden Knights 5, Rangers 3
