Golden Knights - Flames preview and analysis

The Vegas Golden Knights had to answer a tough test coming out of the All-Star break with at least winning one of their back-to-back Alberta games against the Edmonton Oilers.

Vegas will try to complete the sweep on Wednesday when the Golden Knights visit the Calgary Flames, and after a dominant performance from Laurent Brossoit on Tuesday, I have a good feeling about Robin Lehner against the Flames.

The Golden Knights, behind a 28-save shutout from Brossoit, had his best game since signing with the Golden Knights in July. He looked like that old form in Winnipeg when he was backing up Connor Hellebuyck and proving to be one of the best backups in the league. To get a shutout, on the road, against Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl does wonders.

Coming into this back-to-back, the gap between the Golden Knights and the rest of the Pacific Division has shrunk to two points with the Los Angeles Kings and Calgary Flames on their tail. But that win over Edmonton helped things a great deal.

William Karlsson and Reilly Smith each had a goal and an assist, and Alex Pietrangelo and Brett Howden also added goals for the Golden Knights' fifth win in seven games. And all of this is happening with, presumably, Jack Eichel on the horizon. The center is closer each day to making his season debut after undergoing neck surgery, and it may only be a matter of time at this rate.

When Eichel debuts, there will be salary cap ramifications that will shake this team to its foundation. Whether it be Smith, Alec Martinez or someone else, it's going to make a major wave regardless of how it happens.

The Golden Knights open as underdogs in this one, as expected via the SEGABABA, but I like how the Golden Knights looked in Edmonton. It's hard to actually say a team coasted in a blowout in hockey, but it wouldn't shock me if the Golden Knights were well strung enough to go into this game with all momentum and plenty in the tank.

Vegas defeated Calgary 3-2 back on Dec. 5 at T-Mobile Arena, but a lot has changed since then. The Flames remain good, but the Golden Knights were a shell of themselves back in early December. Mark Stone, Max Pacioretty and others were stashed on the injured list. That win proved to be one of their best this season. I'm normally not used to taking back-to-backs via the road, but I like how Vegas looks in this one. Golden Knights 4-2

Betting trends

The Golden Knights are 28-12 (+17.2 units on the moneyline) when they play on the road and the total is six or more.

The Golden Knights are 75-36 (+8.6 units) against division opponents the past three seasons.

The Flames are 99-127 (-57.2 net units) after a stretch of four wins in five games.
