UTEP - North Texas preview and analysis

Last week
UTEP: lost 44-23 vs. No. 23 UTSA
North Texas: won 38-14 at Southern Miss

Remember back in the day -- literally three weeks ago -- when the possible undefeated matchup between UTEP and UTSA was all the rage?

I implore all fans and alumni of the UTEP Miners to just look back on this season and reminisce on the good times and not what's transpired over the past few weeks.

UTEP's dreams at making things happen in Conference-USA are all but dashed, but a strong finish to the season could get the Miners to a decent bowl game. UTEP will hit the road up north to take on the North Texas Mean Green on Saturday.

The Miners have dropped consecutive games after winning five of six to start the season. UTEP followed that with laying an egg in the anticipated matchup against the UTSA Roadrunners, losing 44-23 last week against the undefeated Roadrunners.

Quarterback Gavin Hardison threw for 247 yards and three touchdowns, but did so by completing only 13 of 30 passes to lead an offense that got outgained by a count of 561-374. Ronald Awatt ran for 83 yards on 16 carries, while Jacob Cowing led UTEP with 112 yards on five receptions.

UTEP's defense has been a hot-and-cold adventure the past couple of games. It gave up only 279 yards against Florida Atlantic in a 3-point loss, only to get torched in that capacity by UTSA.

North Texas, meanwhile, has won two straight after a 1-6 start. That nine-point loss to the Liberty Flames three weeks ago seems to have done some good. UNT followed that with an overtime victory against a Rice Owls squad that defeated the UAB Blazers three weeks ago, followed by a 24-point win at Southern Miss last week.

The Mean Green ran mean against the one-win Golden Eagles. Isaiah Johnson ran for 119 yards and a touchdown, while Ikaika Ragsdale ran for 112 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Austin Aune threw for 216 yards and an interception, but UNT hasn't been known for a passing attack in a while.

Prediction

UTEP is 0-4 all-time against UNT. In two road games, they've lost by 26 and 35 points. While the Miners may not be ready to compete with the likes of UTSA, against a North Texas team that hasn't really proven much despite those two victories. UTEP has held opponents to 44 yards below their season average, and UTEP's run defense will prove to be a tough task for this strong UNT run game. UTEP by 10

Betting trends

UTEP is 1-6 ATS in its last seven November games.

UTEP is 7-7 ATS following a game where it committed one turnover or less.

North Texas is 6-3 ATS this season and 2-0 as a favorite.

The under is 14-4 after North Texas wins two straight conference games.
