UConn - Army preview, analysis and prediction

Last week
UConn: won 36-33 vs. Liberty
Army: lost 10-9 at Troy

The UConn Huskies are going bowling. If you think the bowl committee is leaving them out of a bowl game, you’re sadly mistaken. It took one year for Jim Mora Jr. to put this team back in a respectable position, and sure, there are some wins they’ve had along the way that you could say are questionable and if they’re even worthy of getting to a bowl game. But then you see what the Huskies did to Liberty last week and all is over with.

UConn will close its regular season Saturday at West Point against the Army Black Knights, who could potentially play spoiler from what has been a magical season for the Huskies. A three-game winning streak, all coming at home, UConn has a chance to put a stamp on this season with an impressive road win in a tough environment.

Last week was the penultimate game for Mora and the Huskies to prove change is actually here. Facing No. 19 Liberty, UConn scored 15 in the fourth quarter to rally for a shocking 36-33 win that caused the home fans to storm the field for the first time in lord knows how long. UConn freshman quarterback Zion Turner threw for 103 yards and a game-winning 30-yard touchdown pass to Kevens Clericus with 5:43 remaining. Robert Burns ran for 104 yards and a score, and UConn won the game despite being outgained 474-318.

"I'm so happy for this program," Mora said. "They showed a lot of willpower. That was about as complete a team win, team effort as we've had all year."

UConn started the season 1-4 that featured a 34-point loss to Syracuse, a 59-0 loss to Michigan, and a 41-10 loss at NC State. But everything changed with a 19-14 win over Fresno State at home, and the momentum built from there. UConn isn’t the flashiest team, but it’s playing hard under the former NFL head coach. Just a remarkable turnaround after going 1-11 last year.

Army will not be going bowling, but will have a chance to potentially play spoiler as double-digit home favorites. But the Black Knights come into this week having lost two in a row, both by one score, to Air Force at home and then at Troy last week, losing 10-9. It was on this day that Troy linebacker set the all-time tackles record with his 546th tackle, and that defense was more than enough to hold Army to nine points that were all scored in the second quarter.

Army ran for 279 yards, 100 of them and the lone touchdown from Tyhier Tyler, but that was all Army could muster on offense and really all it’s been able to do in the last two weeks.

Prediction

There is a great blue wave roaring its way to West Point and it’s in the shape of a Husky. It’s not the flashiest team, nor the best team that is bowl eligible especially as an Independent, but if you don’t think UConn and Mora want to get that seventh win to ensure it belongs in a bowl game, then you haven’t been following this script closely.
