Tulane - Memphis preview and analysis

It definitely has not been the greatest seasons of the world for the Tulane Green Wave and the Temple Owls, but their pain and suffering throughout this AAC season is surely to come to an end sooner rather than later.

Both teams are coming in having won two of their last three, but the losses in those stretches have come in there previous games. Tulane is coming off an 81- 67 loss to Houston on February 23rd, while Temple is fresh off a 78- 64 loss to the Memphis Tigers on Thursday.

Starting with Tulane, there is no shame in losing to the 14 best team in the country. The Green Wave actually kept things close for the majority of the first half trailing only by 5 after the 1st 20 minutes. Houston eventually pulled away thanks to their defense and their stellar playmaking ability, outscoring Tulane 49- 40 in the second half.

Tulane actually had the right idea. They had four starters score in double figures led by 19 points from Jalen cook on 7 of 17 shooting. Kevin cross also had 16 points but took four of eleven shots to get to that mark. The problem was the overall shooting for Tulane. Tulane shot 41% from the floor and just nine of 25 from 3 point range, which put them in a huge hole early against Houston, with the cougar shooting close to 51% from the floor.

It's been an average season for Tulane, but again there is no shame in losing the way that they did against one of the top teams in the country, especially one of the top defensive teams in the country. For a valiant effort as much as they've had, it just wasn't enough on this day.

The last time these two teams played each other was back on February 12th at Tulane, where the Green Wave won 92- 83 in overtime. Since that game, temple one consecutive games against Cincinnati and an upset victory over SMU on February 16th. The Owls’  most recent game, that 14 point loss to Memphis, was just due to the fact that Memphis is a much better team and proved it in the final 20 minutes.

Temple actually trailed by just one point at halftime, but only shot 39.6% from the floor and made only seven of 26 three-point attempts in the loss to Memphis. Jaleel white had 17 points off the bench on six of 10 shooting, while Hysier Miller led the starters with 16 points and he made two of Temple's 7 threes.

The only outcome this game is going to determine is where these two teams are going to be ranked at the bottom of the conference tournament schedule. They're more than likely going to be playing on the first day and more than likely it's going to be a high-scoring affair no matter who they play. For as much as I wish these two teams could turn back the clock and look like formidable opponents yet again, I don't know if it's going to happen anytime soon, especially for Temple.

Tulane might just be at the run of the mill for the next few years as they try to build an identity for their program, and it's going to take a little bit, but I do like how to lane persevered through this season and is kind of kept things pretty average when it could have been a whole lot worse.

Prediction

When in doubt I'm going to take the likely favored in this one period I think temple has more balance within their lineup, and I think their guard play is going to dictate how this game goes. The way I see it unfolding is that temple has been a much better defensive team this season then Tulane and I don't know if Tulane has enough offense to carry the Green Wave past the owls in the final stretches of this game period so I'm going to take Temple in a single digit game that still should be a lot of fun.
