Titans - Packers preview, analysis and prediction

Last week
Titans: won 17-10 vs. Broncos
Packers: won 31-28 (OT) vs. Cowboys

The Green Bay Packers will not go quietly into the night. They are very much alive in this thing. And in typical Aaron Rodgers fashion, it required a comeback against the Dallas Cowboys because why else wouldn’t it be? The Packers snapped their five-game losing streak and now have new life with the Tennessee Titans coming to town on a short week for Thursday Night Football.

I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was a tad disappointed how that game turned out on Sunday. I thought, like probably the rest of America, that the Cowboys should’ve ran over the Packers after losing to the Detroit Lions in that fashion. But somehow, the Cowboys choked and the Packers found a way to beat Dallas 31-28 in overtime to spoil Mike McCarthy’s homecoming.

Rodgers threw for 224 yards and three touchdowns to second-round pick Christian Watson, who may have become Rodgers’ new best friend. Watson caught 10 passes for 88 yards in what’s been a tough rookie season for him, but he was able to make big plays that the Green Bay offense hasn’t been able to have this year. Couple that with doing it against one of the best defenses in the NFL, of course the confidence is back.

"Last week was definitely a low, rock-bottom-ish for sure," said Rodgers. "Not in a depressive, isolationism way, but more disappointment. And I felt like that was the bottom and it was only up from there. I think a lot of the battles that we face are between I and I, between the person that can go out there and dominate and knows that they can and the little voice in your head that tries to knock you out of that confident perch around you."

The Packers are not in a position now to catch the first-place Minnesota Vikings, whom they lost to back in Week 1. The Vikings are 8-1 and are coming off a win in Buffalo on Sunday in what was the Game of the Year by a country mile. The Packers are still in the thick of things for a wild card spot if this game is the springboard needed to launch them. But going against Derrick Henry and the Titans is no easy task for this run defense that’s still struggling.

The 6-3 Titans are coming off a 17-10 win over the Denver Broncos in which Ryan Tannehill made his return. Tennessee nearly pulled off a miracle with two wins under rookie Malik Willis, but still found a way to lose to the Kansas City Chiefs the week before. Tannehill threw for 255 yards and two touchdowns, while the Broncos’ defense clamped down on Henry for 53 yards on 19 carries, but it also helped Denver’s offense didn’t know what to do either. Nick Westbrook-Ikhine caught 5 passes for 119 yards and both of Tannehill’s touchdowns.

"Everything feels a little better when you win," said Tannehill, who is still getting treatment on his ankle ahead of the short week.

Prediction

I want to be very careful with how I approach this because the Packers are riding such a high of momentum. Rodgers found some balance with Aaron Jones in the backfield, and if Watson can keep this production up, the Green Bay offense will be back. Tannehill needs to be better, or at the very least, the Titans defense needs to do well enough to keep Tannehill in it on a short week. I can’t help but think that the Titans’ offense did better with Willis opening the run game for Henry. This might be the moment the Packers get everything going. Packers by 7
