TCU - Oklahoma State preview, prediction and analysis

Recent form
TCU: won 76-72 vs. West Virginia
Oklahoma State: won 71-61 at Oklahoma

The Big 12 is such a very weird conference right now because I can look at the entire line up up and down in this conference right now, and I would venture to guess that not a single person covering this sport could legitimately say who is going to win this conference.

For a little bit of time I thought it would have been the 15th ranked TCU horned frogs. I would have thought for sure TCU was going to sneak in and be a true threat in this conference, and then they go ahead and lose to West Virginia a few weeks ago and they lose to Mississippi State last week. And now you wonder, as TCU now hits the road to take on the Oklahoma State Cowboys who are on quite the run themselves, is TCU still a threat to win this thing?

But I think when you look at the Big 12 you have to look at them in certain tiers. I look at the top of the conference and see a team like Texas, Kansas State, and TCU deserves to go in there, as really the top teams that you think can challenge for a championship. The second tier right below with question marks galore would be Kansas, Iowa State, Baylor and Oklahoma State.

College basketball though is a very weird thing because it's a similar situation like Texas Tech and Baylor this weekend. TCU is coming into this game having won three of its last four games with the latest being a 76-72 win over West Virginia at home. A great rebounding effort after losing to Mississippi State in overtime earlier in the week.

TCU has the balanced scoring that most teams don’t have. Damion Baugh and Shahada Wells had 16 points each, and Xavier Cork had 15. You can’t even forget how Jakobe Coles came off the bench and had 17 in the win over WVU. You are also not going to find many teams like TCU that will shoot just two of 10 from 3 point range and shoot 51% from the floor to still win a game.

“Everybody is (good) in this league, and obviously we responded with a win shorthanded,” TCU coach Jamie Dixon said. “But we got it done and this is what we’ve got to do here coming forward.”

In a sense, TCU has become one of the darlings of this season. Sure they've only won six of their last 10 but they have also covered in six of their last ten with a push in one of those games. TCU is not the star-studded team that a lot of people would expect but they rely on defense and they rely on the balanced effort in scoring that they have long always gotten.

And while that may be good against most teams, Oklahoma State is playing like a ridiculous team right now. The Cowboys have won four of their last five since losing four of five and are coming off probably their biggest win of the season 71-61 at Oklahoma on Wednesday period now, Oklahoma being an average team at best is not going to wow the pundits most nights. But this is the team that just destroyed Alabama by 40. And for them to go against their instate rivals in their house and win by 10 is about as impressive as you can get. Not only that, Oklahoma State swept the season series against Oklahoma. That is a resume builder.

And you look at Oklahoma State with Kalib Boone scoring 18 points in just 17 minutes, and then Avery Anderson with timely shot making to finish with 12 points, the Cowboys just have that nice round of balance that is turning on at the right time during conference play.

Prediction

All of that being said, I would expect TCU to win this game, but it is not going to be easy. Oklahoma State is 9-2 at home this season. That is a very tough place to play. If TCU does not have a balanced attack this could be a problem. TCU 77, Oklahoma State 73
