Season Record

Cardinals: 3-1, 1st place NL Central // finished in 2nd place of NL Central 2021
Brewers: 2-3, 4th place NL Central // finished in 1st place of NL Central 2021

An MLB National League matchup of last season’s two best National League Central teams… The other three teams (Reds, Cubs, Pirates) were not even close.  The Cardinals flipped the script when they fired their manager after last season and installed the very young Oliver Marimol… maybe they were tired of watching the Brewers do better every season… Maybe they just needed a boost of energy.  The Brewers had some fantastic slugging last season and they are off to a similar start this season. It’s the pitching the Cardinals need to get more out of.

The St Louis Cardinals have won 3 of their first four games.  With three Overs and 1 Push.  They opened their season with a 3-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates… a dream scenario for any team that doesn’t want to get tested right away.  They went 2-1 vs Pittsburgh.. Then had a 1 off win over the Kansas City Royals… mirroring the best advice I give anyone: “If you find yourself in Kansas City, don’t stay… just pass through”. Third baseman Nolan Arenado is off to yet another hot start with 3 home runs in the first four games.

The Milwaukee Brewers have won only 2 of their first 5 games.  Getting spanked 2 out of 3 games against the Chicago Cubs and then splitting a two game stand against the Baltimore Orioles… That doesn’t sound good.  Those are teams that the Brewers should handle easily. Brewers Center Fielder Christian Yelich is batting .333 in 15 at bats… 2 RBI, no home runs. The 2019 and 2018 Yelich was maybe the best hitter in baseball… Since then, during all the Covid protocols, his numbers have been up and down.  The Brewers are looking for him to return fully to form.

St Louis Cardinals vs Milwaukee Brewers Preview and Analysis

Offensive Analysis

The Cardinals are 3rd in runs per game with 6.25, 3rd in batting average with .271, and 6th in OBP with .347.  It is a small sample size and these numbers may not hold… as they are all improvements over last season.

The Brewers are 26th in runs per game with 2.80, 22nd in batting average with .213, and 16th in OBP with .304.  These are lower than last season by a lot.  Keep an eye out for the turn around.

Defensive Analysis

The Cardinals are 17th in ERA with 4.00, 19th in WHIP with 1.36.  They have committed 2 errors and land in 9th place.  They are winning with loads of run support at the moment.

The Brewers are 22nd in ERA with 4.71, 28th in WHIP, and have committed 4 errors so far landing them in 24th place.  The sample size is so small that you should not put too much stock in these numbers.  The young season has been plagued by rain and cold winds.  We will see how the Brewers are really playing at about the 30 game mark.

St Louis Cardinals vs Milwaukee Brewers Prediction

Our prediction for Thursday April 14th is... Cardinals 7 - Brewers 2

The Cardinals are rolling out their big gun for this Thursday matchup.  RHP Adam Wainwright looked great on opening day with 6 strikeouts and is ready for more.

MLB Betting Trends
St Louis is 10-6 (+7.6 Units) against Milwaukee at Milwaukee the last 3 seasons.
8 of 14 games in this series at Milwaukee have gone Under.
Milwaukee is 96-76 against right handed starters the last 3 seasons.

Players to Watch

Cardinals:  Right handed pitcher Adam Wainwright.  The 6’7 40 year old has 185 wins and 105 losses in his career… he has accumulated 2010 strikeouts in 2381 innings pitched.  Every 40 year old in the BIGS is playing on borrowed time and should be enjoying every minute of it.  The early part of the season will be Adam’s time to shine… before the aches and pains creep in.

Brewers: Right handed pitcher Brandon Woodruff.  Bradon has great strikeout numbers for his career but suffered a pure shellacking on opening day when he turned in a 17.18 ERA and got a hard loss.  This could be indicative of greater struggles to come. Brandon is 28-22 for his career and has mostly been used as a rotation guy.  Maybe starter isn’t his gig?

Starting Lineups

Cardinals: RF Dylan Carlson, 1B Paul Goldschmidt, LF Tyler O’Neill, 3B Nolan Arenado, DH Albert Pujols, 2B Tommy Edman, CF Harrison Bader, SS Paul DeJOng, C Andrew Knizner

Brewers: 2B Kolten Wong, SS Willy Adames, LF Christian Yelich, DH Andrew McCutchen, 1B Rowdy Tellez, RF Hunter Renfroe, C Omar Navarez, CF Lorenzo Cain, 3B Jace Peterson

Managers

Cardinals: Oliver Marmol.  Oliver was promoted from bench coach to become the league's current youngest manager.  Last year’s manager Mike Shildt was fired, taking a lot of folks by surprise.

Brewers: Craig Counsell.  Craig has managed the Brewers since 2015.  He is the current longest tenured manager with any team in all of baseball.

Weather Forecast

Cloudy.  49*.  Winds at a dangerous 28 MPH.  Yet another cold weather city that simply can’t build a dome and make baseball better for the players and the fans.  It’s the fans fault… they should demand to be out of the rain, the cold winds, and actually get to enjoy baseball.  Milwaukee is a small city… Maybe they just take what they can get?
