Season Record

Cardinals: 89-63, 1st place NL Central
Dodgers: 104-47, 1st place NL West

A National League battle between the best of the Central division and the best of the West division… but these teams are not close.  The Dodgers have 16 more wins than the Cardinals.  The West has produced the best team in all of baseball while the Central has produced the only division leader in baseball to not be above 90 wins yet.  The shocking first game of the series was a big 11-0 Cardinals win Friday Night over the Dodgers… It is also a game I skipped a prediction for.  The reason for skipping the prediction is the numbers favor the Dodgers top to bottom… yet Albert Pujols (a recent Dodger) of the Cardinals was going for monumental history as he was poised to surpass 700 home runs… He DID!  The reason to skip the bet is (as a gambler you should hold this close to your heart) you simply do not bet against history… and you can not recommend the Cardinals because the moment could have fallen short and carried over to the next game!  However… now it is done.  Pujols has achieved his historic mark!  Now we look at the pitching matchups and the numbers and we make solid predictions that have validity somewhere in this REALITY.

The St Louis Cardinals have had several drinks after Friday’s game… They toasted Albert… they patted each other on the but… and they may have sent behind the scenes cell-phone video to family and friends.  It was a Mitzvah!  Saturday night's game will hit them like a freight train (no, we also skipped Saturday’s prediction in case Albert fell short on Friday)... That leaves us with Sunday where an emotionally spent Cardinals team will roll in on little sleep for yet another game against the best team in the league on the road.  It will be tough to get up for.  They have gone 1-0 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, 1-2 against the San Diego Padres, 3-2 in a long series against the Cincinnati Reds, and 1-0 against the Milwaukee Brewers.  They have won 6 of their last 10 games.

The Los Angeles Dodgers threw Albert Pujols a party.  The Dodgers love Albert because he joined them with half a season to go after the Angels bought him out of his contract… ya know… The same thing that will happen to Mike Trout eventually.  Anyway the Dodgers loved what he added to the line-up in a back-up capacity and to the coaching of younger players.  He was beloved.  With 700 career home runs on the line the Dodgers watched and cheered as Pujols and the Cardinals beat them 11-0.  The cheering is over.  The Dodgers won’t be a party to any party that involves them losing again.  They have won 6 of their last 10 games.  They went 0-1 to the St Louis Cardinals, 3-2 in a long series with the Arizona Diamondbacks, 3-0 against the San Francisco Giants, and 0-1 against the Arizona Cardinals.  At 104 wins so far the Dodgers have easily clinched their spot in the postseason and are assured to get the early bye.  They are playing hard with the pitching rotation to save arms for the postseason… and test young guys for postseason emergencies.  Still… with the odd rotation changes the Dodgers are still the best pitching rotation and bullpen in the league.

St Louis Cardinals vs Los Angeles Dodgers Prediction

Our prediction for Sunday, September 25th is… Dodgers 8 - Cardinals 2

The Dodgers sat back and watched Albert Pujols (who the Dodgers love) hit his 700th home run of his career.  It was a great moment.  Dodger fans were CHEERING Cardinal red.  This sacrilege was completely acceptable in the face of history.  History has been met and the boomerang effect of getting back to real business will be BIG.

MLB Betting Trends

The Dodgers are 44-15 as a favorite of -125 to -175 this season (+21.3 UNITS).
The Dodgers are 72-23 when the total is 9 to 9.5 the last 3 seasons (+23.5 UNITS).

Key Injuries

Cardinals: C Y Molina Quest ** RF T O’Neill Out **

Dodgers: C Austin Barnes (personal) Out ** 3B E. Rios (hammy) Out ** CF K Pillar (shoulder) Out **

Players to Watch

Cardinals: RHP Adam Wainwright 11-10, 3.38 ERA, 138 strikeouts in 184 innings pitched, 1.24 WHIP.  This 41 year old has seen better days.  His numbers signal a way out of the league.  His paychecks still roll in though… and good for him.

Dodgers: RHP Michael Grove, 0-0, 4.66 ERA, 18 strikeouts in 19 innings pitched. 1.55 WHIP.  This 25 year old kid has such little experience that his numbers actually mean nothing.  We will see what part of the experiment he comes out on.  It will also be a bullpen game.

Starting Lineups

Cardinals:

Dodgers: RF Mookie Betts, SS Trea Turner, 1B Freddie Freeman, C Will Smith, 3B Max Muncy, DH Justin Turner, 2B Gavin Lux, LF Joey Gallo, CF Cody Bellinger
