Blues - Golden Knights preview, prediction and analysis

Recent results
Blues: won 5-3 vs. Sharks on Thursday
Golden Knights: won 9 straight; won 7-4 at Sabres on Thursday

Okay, I get it. I hear the rumblings. The Vegas Golden Knights have the best record in hockey, have the longest winning streak in the league, and haven’t really beaten anyone outside of Toronto twice and Winnipeg to get to this 13-2-0 mark to start the year.

I get it, and things are lining up again for them to win again when the struggling St. Louis Blues come into town in which Vegas will have a chance to tie its longest winning streak in team history Saturday in T-Mobile Arena. But coming off a 5-0 road trip and continuing to win in different ways, how can you not like what the Golden Knights are doing right now? And how can you not like them for what Jack Eichel did in Buffalo on Thursday?

In his second return game against his former team, Eichel scored a hat trick in the third period and had an assist in the Golden Knights’ 7-4 win over the Buffalo Sabres in what was a dominant offensive display from the superstar. Yes, he’s a superstar and he’s playing like it right now. Eichel has 19 points in 15 games, the best start to a year in his career.

"It's satisfying," Eichel said. "It's satisfying to come in here and win. I think that was the most important thing for our group tonight. They were desperate and they gave us everything we could handle and we found a way to make the plays when we needed to."

It’s truly remarkable what the Golden Knights have done here with two young goalies in Logan Thompson and Adin Hill. Sure, they’ve been giving up goals a lot as of late, and the defense has taken its foot off the gas in certain situations, but they’re finding a way to utilize the talent and score a lot of goals. This wouldn’t be happening last year, I can assure you.

But that third period in Buffalo, if nothing else will be remembered this year, will go down as one of the highlights of this season for a Golden Knights team that has a lot to prove this year as a whole.

"Probably the best start in my career that I've ever been on," Golden Knights captain Mark Stone said. "Knock on wood, good health. Great goaltending, our defense has been good. Jack's kind of leading the way offensively, but if you look down on the board, so many guys chipping in offensively. … So, it was a good game for us and it's a good start. We've got to go home and carry the momentum."

No one could have imagined the Blues would be this bad and would be handing the Golden Knights a 10th straight win on a silver platter, but an 8-game losing streak will do that to you. The Blues did end that streak on Thursday in a 5-3 win against the San Jose Sharks; those five goals are important because that’s how many St. Louis scored in the last four games combined.

"It was obviously a good [feeling] for sure," St. Louis coach Craig Berube said. "You lose as much as we have lately, and it's really not a good feeling, but we got a win. It was a battle, but we got a win and I thought we did a lot of good things tonight."

Prediction

This shouldn’t be too much for Vegas to handle. Play your game the right way, keep St. Louis to the outside, and you’ll have a 10th straight win. Make it so. Golden Knights win 5-2
