Blues - Avalanche preview, prediction and analysis

The St. Louis Blues will be playing the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday, January 28 in Denver, Colorado.

The St. Louis Blues lost against the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday, January 26 in Tempe, Arizona with a score of 5-0. The St. Louis Blues currently rank 6th in the Central division.

Thomas Greiss made 21 saves for the Blues.

"Two turnovers in the second period, and it's in our net," St. Louis coach Craig Berube said. "The third period we come out and get scored on, on the first shift, with five veteran players on the ice. Game's over."

Coyotes player Nick Schmaltz's third goal was initially disallowed because the net came off its moorings, but the call was overturned upon video review.

"I took a swipe at [the net] as it's going in and obviously pushed it off, but for what our coaches were saying, the puck was going the other way and that should have been a penalty, not a goal," St. Louis forward Brayden Schenn said. "But the refs made the call, and that's what it is."

Blues defenseman Justin Faulk's apparent goal 5:05 into the game was quickly overturned because forward Robert Thomas brushed Vejmelka's glove just before the puck went in.

St. Louis' three consecutive losses have come against the below-.500 Chicago Blackhawks, Buffalo Sabres and Coyotes.

"Those are three teams where, if you look at the schedule, and with all due respect to every team -- anybody can beat anyone -- those are the games that you have to play better in and get points," Schenn said. "To come away with zero points it's obviously tough, and now you find yourself digging a hole again."

The St. Louis Blues have won four of their last 10 games.

The Colorado Avalanche lost against the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday, January 26 in Denver, Colorado with a score of 5-3. The Colorado Avalanche currently rank 4th in the Central Division.

Mikko Rantanen scored twice, and Samuel Girard had a goal and an assist for the Avalanche. Pavel Francouz made 27 saves.

"I really liked our first two periods," Colorado coach Jared Bednar said. "There's some habits that are creeping in our game though, whether it's for five minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes. I just don't like getting outworked for stretches that cost you hockey games, and that's what it was.

"Let's call it what it is; the intensity that they came out with in the start of the third period and what we had was not comparable. If you look back on it, it doesn't surprise you that you let the game slip away, and we're too deep in the season now for that to happen."

Girard has three points (one goal, two assists) in the past two games.

"I liked I've really liked the intensity Sam's playing with recently," Bednar said. "Like his defending; he's hard, he's quick, he's got a great stick. Tonight, he was involved offensively. A big difference maker for us tonight."

The Colorado Avalanche have won seven of their last 10 games.
