Siena - Marist preview, analysis and prediction

Recent form
Siena: won 69-62 vs. Fairfield on Jan. 9
Marist: lost 79-75 vs. Rider on Jan. 9

Some MAAC-tion for you on this Friday with the Siena Saints and the Marist Red Foxes face off in the great city of Poughkeepsie, New York.

It’s a matchup featuring two of the lesser teams in the conference, however. Siena has only mustered five wins but have won four of five going into the bulk of conference play, while Marist has dropped two of three with both losses coming by four points or fewer.

But if you’re really thinking on which way to go with this game, I’m a fan of the group that’s played only one gam in the last month. Siena’s 69-62 win against Fairfield on Jan. 9 was the first time they’ve seen action since Dec. 11 at Holy Cross.

We’ve seen some teams fall into the trap of not coming back from COVID postponements to playing to their full potential. But not only did Siena keep things the same, but the well-rested Saints rode a wave of dominant momentum in the second half to score 44 points in the final 20 minutes.

Siena won despite not having leading scorer Colby Rogers in the lineup, but Nick Hopkins carried the load with 19 points in Rogers’ absence. The Saints also shot below 41 percent, but held Fairfield to just 3 of 18 from 3-point range.

It’s been an uphill climb for the Saints since their 1-5 start; they were manhandled by double digits against St. Bonaventure, Yale, Georgetown and Delaware. Their season seemed to turn around after losing in overtime to Bucknell. It was the Saints’ most competitive game to this point, and they pulled off an impressive road win at Army.

We’ll never know if that would’ve catapulted to more of a desirable stretch with Siena getting four games postponed/canceled due to COVID-19 concerns. This matchup against Marist is their first of a three-game road trip that includes a rematch against Manhattan from that home loss Dec. 3.

Siena’s points per game allowed is still skewed from that early-season run, and I like how their defense has looked over the past few games, postponements in-between. Marist does not share the ball well 8.9 assists per game) and has to rely on individual defense to make plays happen. Give me the Saints with the points. Siena by 8
