Seahawks - Packers preview and analysis

Last week
Seahawks: Bye (won 31-7 vs. Jaguars in Week 8)
Packers: lost 13-7 at Chiefs

Welcome back, Russell Wilson. You’ve been missed. A sub-.500 team awaits you to raise from the depths and make a second-half run.

Wilson returns after missing a month due to a broken finger, and the run to get the Seattle Seahawks back to playoff contention begins on Sunday when they visit the Green Bay Packers in Lambeau.

Who may, or may not, have Aaron Rodgers as quarterback. We won’t know until possibly this weekend, which means this line could fluctuate a ton between now and then.

Whether or not Rodgers returns this week due to his self-inflicted COVID-19 absence, the story is Wilson’s return and his path to revitalize this Seattle offense. There is no need to slander Geno Smith on this day. The man, whether he be a good quarterback or not, did what was asked of him over the last number of games.

But Seahawks fans are likely beyond thrilled that No. 3 is back and likely to make his 150th NFL start.

Seattle is coming off its bye week, but ended its three-game losing streak two weeks ago with a dominant 24-point victory at home over the Jacksonville Jaguars; surprisingly enough the Seahawks’ first win at home this season.

Smith was actually very good, completing 20 of 24 passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns. The 83.3 completion percentage was a career best for Smith on at least 20 attempts, and most importantly, no turnovers.

"It's a great day for Geno, and he just deserves it," Seattle coach Pete Carroll said. "He's been such a great Seahawk, and all of that. He played his way to (win) this game. Nobody gave him nothing. He earned this thing today."

The Seahawks, despite losing three of four, are not quite out of the playoff mix just yet. Perhaps the NFC West with no hope of catching the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams, but a wild-card spot is not out of the realm of possibility heading into the second half of the season.

Wilson, should he throw three touchdown passes this week, will become the fourth quarterback ever to throw for 280 touchdowns in his first 150 starts. The likelihood of that is great considering how great Wilson has been on the road this season (8 total TDs, 0 INT).

But Lambeau Field has been a home of horrors for Wilson; think back to the Divisional Round loss a couple of years ago for a Seattle team that should have been a Super Bowl contender.

The Packers are coming off a 6-point loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on the road that ended their seven-game winning streak. Last year’s first-round pick Jordan Love threw for 190 yards, a touchdown and an interception in a tough ask in place of Rodgers.

"Aaron's had experience where he can get you out of some situations," Packers coach Matt LaFleur said, "but you know, that's why I think when you have a young quarterback, you have to have the right plan as a coach. ... I think this falls on me not having a good enough plan to go out there against that pressure, especially with a young quarterback."

Davante Adams caught six passes for 42 yards, but it was Randall Cobb leading the receivers with 50 yards on three receptions. Right now, Love may start this week, or he may not. Green Bay being field-goal favorites is really the weird part of this matchup.

Prediction

You can expect the Packers’ defense to send many bodies at Wilson this weekend. But it’s not like Wilson forgot how to run. He may need to run for his life in this game, but one thing you can expect with the return of Wilson is the return of the deep ball. DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett have probably missed that more than anything. Seattle rides the wave of momentum from their leader and gets a big win. Seahawks by 7

Betting trends

The Seahawks are 3-1 ATS as an underdog this season, and 2-0 as a road dog.

The Seahawks are 1-5 ATS in their last six following a win of 10 or more points.

The Packers are 21-13 ATS in their last 34 as a favorite.

Following an under, the Packers are 15-8 ATS in their last 23.

Players to watch

Seahawks: DK Metcalf was not short on catching touchdowns two weeks ago, but he should see an uptick in yards after 43 against Jacksonville. He joined Odell Beckham Jr. and Randy Moss as the only receivers since 1990 with 25 receiving touchdowns in their first 40 games.

Packers: Wide receiver Allen Lazard caught the lone touchdown pass from Love last week, his ninth career touchdown, and has three straight games with a catch in the end zone.
