Recent Form:

The Mariners are 4-6 over their last ten games (will change with Friday’s result). They dropped 2 games to the Houston Astros, dropped 2 games to the Texas Rangers, and lost the first of this series against the Yankees Thursday night.  Seattle’s lineup isn’t the best in the major Leagues or even the al west, but they are still major league players and will have to rely on their top performers to get them back on track.  Barring Covid-19 or freak knee injuries, the latest odds tell us the Mariners are going to keep repeating the last outing and allowing runs against almost any opponent.

The Yankees are 8-2 over their last ten games (will change with Friday’s result).  The staff averages have been improving.  If they take Friday’s game, they will roll into Saturday off their fifth victory in a row.  The wagers in this series should be on the Bronx Bombers.  Bottom Line, the Yanks are surging in the al east and should be comfortable with 7 home games to feast off the Baltimore Orioles and Seattle Mariners.  They started this stretch beating the Tampa Bay Rays 2 out of 3, so there have been quality wins.  The only mini-trend seems to be the 2 times they got beat they got shelled big time.  Any high school data classes will tell you a 14-0 loss to the Rays is an anomaly, a 7-1 loss to the Orioles means you don’t win them all.

Series History
:

The Mariners are 1-3 against the Yankees in 2021.

Statistical Comparison:

The Mariners are last in the league in total hits (795), last in the league in batting average (.222), but 19th in runs scored (466) so if they have one positive offensive trait it’s getting runners around the bases just enough to be competitive.   The Mariners are 18th in team ERA (4.49), 22nd in strike-outs (905). So while not great, the pitching seems to be what keeps them from completely bottoming out.

The Yankees are 23rd in total hits, 17th in batting average (.236), but 8th in runs scored.  The extra runs scored come from having multiple power hitters in the line-up who occasionally knock one out.  Plus Anthony Rizzo has been coming on strong as of late with both solid play and a perfect New York name.  Yankees pitching is 11th in team ERA (3.75), 8th in strikeouts (1025).

Mariners vs Yankees Game Preview:

This is the third of a four game series for the Mariners in the Bronx. The game results are not yet in for Friday night’s game.   The Mariners starting pitcher will be Chris Flexen (1.26 WHIP).  He has been just average for the season, but in his last 11 starts he has a .333 ERA and has been holding hitters to a .680 OPS.  The Yankees have never faced Flexen before so there are no data sets to compare. Similarly, he has never faced the Yankees which has a way of rattling guys and makes pitchers focus too much on wrist and elbow mechanics to block out the history of the pinstripes.  He most likely resumes his initial framework of average and abandons the 11 games of improvement. I see this third game as the Mariners’ third loss in a sweep series.

The Yankees will be starting Andrew Heaney 6-8, 5.42 ERA, 1.32 WHIP.  This has the mariner’s lineup drooling a bit.  Heaney’s Yankees debut was not so great, he gave up 4 solo homers in 4 innings of work.  The bullpen should be warming up early and baseball info solutions has any number of replacement calculations for how many relievers will take the mound.  My money says that Heaney doesn’t give up 4 homers again.  I think he’ll settle in and throw a couple quality innings to help get this win. Of course with a nickname like Heandog, I’m not counting on seeing any record for strikeouts either.

Trends:

Mariners: The Mariners have notched 6 Overs and 4 Unders in their last ten games. O/U for the season is 56-51-3

Yankees: The Yankees have notched 3 Overs and 7 Unders in their last ten games.  O/U for the season is 45-60-3
