An American League Matchup between the #2 team and the #4 team. The American League West is particularly soft as divisions go. These two teams regularly square off without fully impressing anyone. The Mariners had the pleasure of going on a great win streak in July… It raised them to respectability and gave them a shot at a Wild Card Birth. The Angels in the meantime have been spiraling into obscurity that is desperately calling for a massive shake-up. They fired their manager in June and have been operating on an interim manager since… This guy is not getting the full time job. Let’s look at the pitching matchup and the numbers… and then make a solid prediction.
The Seattle Mariners have won 6 of their last 10 games. They are doing it all with good pitching and lousy batting. If they do get a Wild Card spot because of whatever machinations the rest of the season may go through.. They will be out quickly for a lack of offense. They went 1-1 against the Texas Rangers, 2-1 against the New York Yankees, 2-2 against these Los Angeles Angels, and 1-0 against the New York Yankees. It is wildly encouraging that this team has what it takes to beat the Yankees from time to time. It is not so encouraging that they could also drop games to the Rangers and Angels. This is a team all over the spectrum of good and bad. In the offseason if they address the offense they may have something great growing in the rainy Seattle dirt… but until then we will get constant ups and downs.
The Los Angeles Angels are another team with OK pitching and lousy offense,,, but both sets of stats are lower than the Mariners… This is amazing because the Angels have the two best players in any series with these teams in Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout. No Mariner will ever rise to these guys level of amazing… however the Angels do this!... They sign great guys and immediately stop spending money to build a team. They want just enough to move the turnstiles. They need to be shaken up.. And just like the owner in Oakland… They should be pushed out of the game. They have won 6 of their last 10 games. They went 1-1 against the Minnesota Twins, 3-0 against the Oakland Athletics, 2-2 against these Seattle Mariners, and 0-1 against the Oakland A’s. It has been a sad winning 10 game stretch. It can’t hurt and it can’t help.
