What a strong opening weekend for Scott Rickenbach going 3-0-0 with his best MLB picks. Opening weekend definitely showcased some intriguing matchups in this very-early stages of baseball, but we know it's a six-month marathon, not a sprint, for some of these teams. The same applies for baseball betting and not getting too caught up with the sticker shock of it all. Mariners - White Sox preview and analysis

Leave it to the Chicago White Sox for finding the flair for the dramatic. That’s one thing they were so good at last year, and through four games of this season, drama is not at a minimum for the White Sox. Case in point, the day Luis Robert had in the field and the plate.

Robert saved a homer, and then hit one himself to propel the White Sox to a 3-2 win over the Seattle Mariners to win the first game of their three-games set on Tuesday at Guaranteed Rate Field. The teams will continue their series with Game 2 in Chicago on Wednesday.

Robert’s 408-foot blast in the bottom of the sixth inning gave Chicago a 2-1 lead. Eloy Jimenez provided an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. But Robert was doing it all; making plays in the outfield, hitting homers, stealing bases, etc. Whatever you needed him to do in this game, he did it.

“That's what I've done throughout my whole career in the U.S.,” said Robert of his stolen bases, through interpreter Billy Russo. “That's what everybody has seen from me. I expect to keep doing that as much as I can."

Considering how Robert was one of those players the White Sox had that benefitted from a run for a division title last season, he’ll be called upon to be a major contributor this year, along with the likes of Jimenez.

“He's maturing, and he's growing,” said White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson. “He's got a chance to be one of the best in the game as long as he keeps working. But what he did today is definitely -- you don't see that every day. I think that shows how special he is and how special he can really be.”

The White Sox have won three straight since that Opening Day mishap in Detroit that was turned into a Detroit win by way of the ball bouncing out of the glove and off the wall. That part isn’t the shocking turn of it all, but it’s a group that has found different ways to win.

That’s the position the Mariners need to eventually get to themselves if they want to compete in the AL West. The surging Seattle squad got an incredible six-strikeout performance from rookie Matt Brash. Unfortunately, he just couldn’t get the win. Brash threw 5.1 innings and allowed just two runs on four hits.

“The pregame ceremony was extremely long, but for him to handle that, in his first Major League start, was awesome,” said Mariners manager Scott Servais. “I just said ‘Hey, go out and pitch like you’re a young kid pitching to Canada today.’ He looked at me [like], ‘I got this.’”

Seattle had seven hits, but couldn’t do anything outside of the first and ninth inning. Eugenio Suarez had a homer in the first inning and the Mariners cut the lead to one in the ninth but couldn’t get anything across after that.

“That’s my game plan every time, attack these hitters,” Brash said. “I was trying to get ahead early with offspeed and fastballs, and I thought I did a really good job of that.”

Prediction

Robbie Ray takes the mound for the second time as a Mariners starter against Dallas Keuchel making his first start. When it comes to Ray, I love how he looked in the hostile environment in Minnesota. Against a more established opponent and a playoff contender, I’d expect Ray to look dominant and get himself a key win here. That’s the thing with the Mariners; there haven’t been any meaningful games yet. Chicago is one that will cross that off the list. Mariners win 4-2
