Season Record

Mariners: 16-21, 4th place AL West
Red Sox:14-22, 4th place AL East

An MLB American League matchup of East vs West.  Both teams in question are in 4th place in the division.  The Seattle Mariners have had a rough start to the season. They finished last season with 90 wins and in second place in the AL West.. not bad. This season they are way off pace to get 90 wins again.  The season is young… there is plenty of time… but they will have to win more than a few to get back on track.  The Boston Red Sox are also off to a bad start.  They finished last season with 92 wins and a second place finish in the AL East…. which was a brutally tough division with the Yankees, the Blue Jays, and the Rays pushing them all season long.  The Red Sox seem to have been leapfrogged by all of last year’s competition.  The Sox are off to such a bad start they are only ½ a game better than the Baltimore Orioles!  That is a rough start.  So when picking between two losers… How will we know which is the Great betting opportunity?  Let’s check the numbers shall we?

The Seattle Mariners have won 4 of their last 10 games.  5 Overs and 5 Unders.  They went 0-2 (with one left to play) against the Toronto Blue Jays, 2-1 against the New York Mets, 1-2 against the Philadelphia Phillies, and 1-1 against the Tampa Bay Rays.  Probably the biggest problem facing the Mariners is: everything… They are below average in pitching AND hitting though not dead last in either.  They are average in fielding errors and average in Quality starts… It really is an average to below average team in every aspect.  They currently have 10 names on the injury list… guys that might be needed… guys that could be used.. Especially the 6 missing pitchers. So there is room for a Summer bloom as guys make it back into the fold.

The Boston Red Sox have won 4 of their last 10 games.  3 Overs, 6 Unders, and 1 Push.  They went 1-1 against the Houston Astros (with 1 left to play), 2-1 against the Texas Rangers, 1-1 against the Atlanta Braves, 0-3 against the Chicago White Sox.  Probably the biggest problem facing the Red Sox is:  The Curse of the Bambino… People mistakenly think the curse was broken when the Red Sox finally broke the World Series drought in the early 2000’s.  Sure… but that doesn’t mean they… OK, the problem is poor play.  The roster is not bad with Rafael Devers, Xander Bogaerts, Alex Verdugo, Nathan Eovaldi, Michael Wacha… They just aren’t rising to the occasion.  They aren’t playing well at the same time… they aren’t playing well as a unit.  Pitcher Chris Sale is on the injury list… Getting him back in June will help… but how deep will Boston fall into the well?

Seattle Mariners vs Boston Red Sox Prediction

Our prediction for Thursday May 19th is… Red Sox 6 - Mariners 3

Bet the Sox.  The Sox are at home on a damp day in Boston… The Mariners have just traveled 2000 miles across the country… checked into a boring hotel in a boring city… with the fresh memory of the Toronto Blue Jays pounding on them for 3 straight games.  They won’t be in the mood for more baseball.
