Kraken - Islanders preview, prediction and analysis

Recent results
Kraken: won 3-1 at Blue Jackets
Islanders: won 2-1 (OT) vs. Golden Knights

The Seattle Kraken will be playing the New York Islanders on Tuesday, February 7 in Elmont, New York.

The Seattle Kraken won against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday, January 28 at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, Washington with a score of 3-1. The Seattle Kraken currently rank 1st in the Pacific Division.

Eeli Tolvanen scored for the third straight game.

"It means a lot. There were some rough patches at the start of this year," said Tolvanen, who was claimed off waivers from the Nashville Predators on Dec. 12. "Hockey wasn't that much fun. Just coming here and getting the trust from the coaches and getting the opportunity to play a lot, it feels really good."

Philipp Grubauer made 24 saves for his first win since Jan. 10, and Morgan Geekie and Alex Wennberg scored for the Kraken (29-15-5), who were playing their last game before the All-Star break.

"It's a real good win for our team," Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said. "It's a really good response coming off last night (a 5-2 loss to the Calgary Flames) and it's a great way to finish off the month of January."

The Kraken are 11-3-1 in their past 15 games, outscoring opponents 60-37.

"If you look at that on the schedule, if you look at the travel, the number of games, you'd expect a little bit of fatigue in this dressing room," Hakstol said. "To finish the month [11-3-1] coming out, so it's pretty good. This group should be proud of that."

Geekie gave Seattle a 1-0 lead at 8:40 of the first period with a wrist shot from the high slot off a pass from Brandon Tanev. It was Geekie's first goal since Nov. 3 (30 games).

Wennberg, who was playing his 600th NHL game, made it 2-0 at 8:33 of the second period. Jordan Eberle took the puck out from behind the net and sent a pass to Wennberg in front.

"I feel like we didn't use our speed last game," Wennberg said. "We talked about it, close that game and focus on this one. We take it game by game, and all we look at now is how we played today, and now we're going to have a little bit of a break and focus on the next game."

Tolvanen pushed it to 3-1 at 5:39 of the third period. Oliver Bjorkstrand broke up a pass in the neutral zone, and Tolvanen carried the puck into the zone and scored with a wrist shot from the high slot.

The Seattle Kraken have won six of their last 10 games.

The New York Islanders won against the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday, January 28 at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York with a score of 2-1 in overtime. The New York Islanders currently rank 6th in the Metropolitan Division.

Semyon Varlamov made 45 saves for the New York Islanders.

Varlamov made four saves in overtime, including stopping William Carrier on a penalty shot 26 seconds into the period.

"It's nerve-racking I think for both of us, for the shooter and for the goalie," Varlamov said. "Goalie doesn't want to give one up, shooter wants to score, so I mean, I'm glad everything worked out for me. I was pretty happy to make that save."

Mathew Barzal won it for New York with 32 seconds remaining in overtime when he faked a one-timer, skated into the top of the right circle, and shot blocker side on Logan Thompson.

It was Barzal's first goal since Jan. 5 (11 games).

"It was great to see him score," Islanders coach Lane Lambert said. "He's had some opportunities over this stretch. … He put himself in a position tonight, and he shot the puck, and he got rewarded for it."

Anders Lee also scored for the Islanders (25-22-5), who were coming off a 2-0 win against the Detroit Red Wings on Friday.

"That was huge," Barzal said. "It kind of puts us right back in the hunt, so I'm sure we're going to be hungry to have a good start after the [All-Star] break."

The New York Islanders have won three of their last 10 games as of January l.
