Kraken - Oilers preview, prediction and analysis

Recent results
Kraken: lost 4-1 vs. Lightning on Monday
Oilers: won 4-3 at Golden Knights on Saturday

The Seattle Kraken will look to bounce back against the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday in Edmonton, playing the second night of a back-to-back.

The Kraken had their eight-game winning streak end on Monday in a 4-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Seattle was the first team ever to sweep a road trip of seven games and did so in a fashion that involved Canada and a win in Boston. Talk about impressive.

But Seattle ran out of gas. Vince Dunn scored the lone goal to cut the lead to 2-1 in the third, but that was all the Kraken could generate. Philipp Grubauer made 27 saves, but Seattle couldn’t find an answer for Andrei Vasilevskiy’s 22 saves.

"I think we could have been a lot better with our execution right out of our zone," Dunn said. "I think we had our chances and our looks. I definitely think we turned down a couple of shots, but for the most part our execution needs to be better."

The Kraken are still on an 8-2 run in their last 10 with the over/under splitting at five apiece during this run, so Seattle is winning in many different ways. Seattle is two points behind the Vegas Golden Knights for the top spot in the Pacific Division (with two games in hand) and continue to be the shock of all shocks this season. But even in a loss to the three-time Eastern Conference champions, there’s still a lot they need to work on.

"They're tough team to get inside on, they box you out early," Kraken coach Dave Hakstol said. "You've got to find a way to get inside and win that race inside early and then shoot pucks inside, and you know, we weren't able to do that."

The Oilers have won three straight, all against division opponents, and can really offset losing four of five should they get this win here. Edmonton is coming off a 4-3 win over the struggling Vegas Golden Knights, who were the first team to take advantage of not having Mark Stone in the lineup.

Leon Draisaitl scored twice, and the Oilers have outscored their opponents 17-6 during this three-game winning streak. Edmonton is making a run for the top of the Pacific, but still have. a long way to go at seven points back of Vegas.

"I feel a little better (about my game)," Draisaitl said. "I'm obviously frustrated with I'm not hitting the spots that I know that I would like to hit. That's just way it goes sometimes. Sometimes they go in, other times they don't. I just got to continue to pick spots and fire away."

The Oilers have worked at a 6-4 clip on the money line in the last 10 while the over has cashed in four straight games. We know Edmonton runs on Connor McDavid and Draisaitl, but they’re going to always need secondary scoring if they want a chance.

"It was a really competitive, entertaining hockey game," Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft said. "There were some moments we'd like to have back on the defensive side. For the most part, we controlled most of that game. … We got contributions from all of our 11 forwards. I thought the seven (defensemen), in different ways, affected the game tonight. I thought it was a mindset that's going through our group."

Prediction

The Kraken are likely to go with the league’s player of the week in Martin Jones, so there’s a chance he’ll get to show if last week was a fluke in his 3-0-0 start. Seattle knocked off Edmonton 5-2 in Edmonton on Jan. 3. I can’t believe I’m saying this but until proven otherwise, I believe in Martin Jones. Kraken 4, Oilers 3
