Sharks - Jets preview, prediction and analysis

On March 6, 2023, the San Jose Sharks will face off against the Winnipeg Jets in what promises to be an exciting game at Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Both teams have had their ups and downs this season, but they will be looking to secure a win and climb up the standings in their respective divisions.

The Sharks’ season has been one to forget, and now can’t get over any faster. At 18-33-12, and fresh off trading Timo Meier, the Sharks are scrounging for any hope they can get. Which, of course, is none. San Jose is coming off an 8-3 loss to the Washington Capitals at home, their fifth straight loss, and eight in the last nine. The only win, 4-0 against Seattle, was the only victory in a seven-game homestand. Tomas Hertl scored, as did Nico Sturm.

"Things unraveled, and it's really unfortunate because I really liked our approach to the game," San Jose coach David Quinn said. "I thought we played a really good first period and I thought it continued throughout the second, and then it just got away from us."

The Jets are coming off a 7-5 win over the Edmonton Oilers in an attempt to get back to the top three of the Central Division. Losses to the Oilers and Kings haven’t helped, but getting back home and trying to get back into a rhythm is good. Josh Morrissey had two goals and an assist, and Dylan DeMelo added a goal and an assist for Winnipeg.

"Sometimes when you go through these slides, mentally you become a little fragile and you give up a goal and all of the sudden you don't want to give up the next one and you're playing a little slower," Jets forward Adam Lowry said. "We played a lot freer today, and faster. … That's what we're looking for, not to wilt under pressure, not to wilt when things get tough, but come together and play the way we're asked to play."

In terms of style of play, the Sharks and Jets are fairly evenly matched. Both teams are struggling to score right now with the Sharks averaging 2.94 goals per game and the Jets averaging 3.11 goals per game. However, the Sharks have the edge defensively, ranking in the top half of the league in goals against per game, while the Jets are giving up just 2.78

One key matchup to watch will be the battle between the Sharks' penalty kill unit and the Jets' power play. The Sharks have one of the best penalty kills in the league, operating at an 82.8% success rate, while the Jets have a formidable power play, operating at a 21.6% success rate. If the Jets can capitalize on their power play opportunities, it could swing the game in their favor.

Fans can expect a fast-paced game with plenty of scoring opportunities and physical play. The Sharks' veteran presence and defensive prowess could give them the edge, but the Jets' explosive offense and home-ice advantage make this game anyone's to win.

Prediction

You can’t get me enough evidence to say that the Sharks know how to play hockey at the moment. Jets 4, Sharks 1
