Sharks - Lightning preview, prediction and analysis

Recent results
Sharks: won 6-4 at Penguins
Lightning: won 5-2 vs. Kings

The San Jose Sharks will be playing The Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday, February 7 in Tampa, Florida.

The San Jose Sharks won against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, January 28 at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with a score of 6-4. The San Jose Sharks currently rank 7th in the Pacific Division.

Logan Couture had an NHL career-high five points, including scoring the go-ahead goal with 4:25 remaining in the third period, for the San Jose Sharks. Couture, who finished with two goals and three assists, gave San Jose a 5-4 lead with a wrist shot that trickled through Casey DeSmith after Alexander Barabanov passed back to him on a 2-on-1. Couture then scored an empty-net goal with 10 seconds remaining for the 6-4 final.

"It's nice to see the puck going in," Couture said. "Pucks just found the back of the net for us tonight. … We've lost a lot of heartbreakers this year, so it's good to see one go our way."

Barabanov had a goal and two assists, and Erik Karlsson had a goal and an assist for the Sharks (15-25-11), who had lost four in a row (0-2-2). Kaapo Kahkonen made 37 saves.

Michael Eyssimont put San Jose ahead 1-0 at 1:25 of the first period, scoring on a wrist shot from the slot off a backhand pass from Couture from behind the net.

Karlsson tied it 2-2 at 19:53, tapping in a pass from Barabanov, and Noah Gregor put the Sharks back in front 3-2 at 4:54 of the second period with a wrist shot off a rebound.

"A lot of back-and-forth," Gregor said. "We did a good job to stay in the game all night and get the lead late there, so it was a great win."

Ryan Poehling tied it 3-3 at 14:54 with a short-handed goal. He scored five-hole with a wrist shot on a 2-on-1 for his first goal since Nov. 25 (14 games). Barabanov responded for San Jose to make it 4-3 at 17:07 before Malkin tied it 4-4 at 10:06 of the third period.

"No one's been kicked in the gut more than us this year," Sharks coach David Quinn said. "To dust ourselves off and come in here and show up the way we did tonight, I couldn't be more proud of our group."

The San Jose Sharks have won three of their last 10 games.

The Tampa Bay Lightning won against the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday, January 28 at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida with a score of 5-2. The Tampa Bay Lightning currently rank 3rd in the Atlantic Division.

Nick Perbix had three assists, and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 26 saves for the Lightning (32-15-1), who have won three in a row, all at home, and played their final game before the NHL All-Star break.

Tampa Bay defeated the Minnesota Wild 4-2 on Tuesday and the Boston Bruins 3-2 on Thursday.

"It was three tough teams to play in this league -- big, strong, fast playoff teams, and our guys handled it well," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. "If there was a little bit of worry it was after a big win against the Bruins, and our impending break, how would we handle this game and would we look past it. They didn't and they got the points we needed."

Brayden Point gave Tampa Bay a 1-0 lead at 5:02 of the first period when he scored in front after Nikita Kucherov fed him from behind the net.

Pierre-Edouard Bellemare made it 2-0 at 6:21 from the high slot after Perbix picked off a pass near the right boards.

"At times it's a challenge for [the fourth line] to try to create some offense," Bellemare said. "But it's not just about the goals. To be able to play at the end of the game and have the coaches trust us to do the right thing, that's something you want to be able to bring. Sometimes you get rewarded for doing the right things."

Corey Perry pushed the Lightning lead to 3-1 at 15:57. Perbix's shot from the point deflected off the stick of Los Angeles defenseman Matt Roy, and Perry scored from low in the left circle.

Ross Colton extended it to 4-1 at 15:20 of the second period when he scored over Quick's outstretched right pad from in close.

"The leaders were pretty vocal about us coming to work and handling our business," Colton said. "We got really hyped up for the Boston game and getting those two points was huge. Then I think we just rode the momentum into tonight."

Victor Hedman scored on a point shot through traffic at 16:03 of the third period for the 5-2 final.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have won eight of their last 10 games as of January 28, they will be playing the Florida Panthers tonight, February 6.

Prediction

The fact Tampa may waste an Andrei Vasilevskiy performance won't bode well for the Lightning. Against an inferior team at home, this should be something to observe. Lightning 4, Sharks 1
