San Diego Padres:  2-8 last 10

San Francisco Giants Analysis

The San Francisco Giants are coming into this game after losing in their series finale on Sunday to the Atlanta Braves 3-0. This will be the 2nd game of a three-game series between them and the Padres with the series opener being on Tuesday, the result is still pending for that game. The Giants managed to win their series against the Braves over the weekend. They faced the Padres in a four-game series right before the Braves and tied that one as each won 2 games. The Giants have been in great form though with series sweeps of the Chicago Cubs and the Colorado Rockies prior to playing the Padres. Kevin Gausman will be getting the nod for Tuesday's game while there is no scheduled pitcher starting on the mound for them in this game on Wednesday. This could end up being a bullpen day for them as they have a few starters in the rotation out on the injured list right now. The Giants have cooled off a bit with their batters recently. In their last series, they scored 8 runs through 3 games while allowing their opponents to score 8 runs against them in that same span. Their last 2 games have especially been low scoring with a 2-0 win and a 3-0 loss. Their bullpen has been great all year as they have one of the best pitching staffs in the league, but their offense is starting to cool off and that could be trouble for them here with limited pitching options to back them up.

San Diego Padres Analysis

The Padres are coming into this game after losing in their series finale on Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals 8-7. This is the 2nd game of a three-game series with the Giants with the first game being on Tuesday, that game's result is still pending. They had Monday off to regroup as they were swept by the Cardinals in that series, striking a serious blow to their playoff hopes. Their last 2 wins came against these Giants just a week ago. Those are their only 2 wins in their last 10 games as they were swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the series prior to facing the Giants. They do not have any scheduled pitchers set to throw the first pitch on Tuesday nor do they have a starter for this game on Wednesday. They also have a lot of their pitchers making their way on to the injured list so the pickings are slim for them in this one. It could end up being a bullpen game for them as well here. The Padres have fallen right out of a Wild Card spot with the way they have been playing in their recent weeks. It was just 2 weeks ago when they were holding down the final NL Wild Card spot with a decent lead over the next team but as this final stretch has hit they have completely been tanking with their performances. They have fallen out of a spot now with the Cardinals holding it down currently and they now sit 4 games back from them, with the Cincinnati Reds also standing between them and the Cardinals. Their chances to appear in the postseason have become very slim but there is still a chance for them, it begins with winning every single game for the rest of the season, and that has to start here in this game. It is not like their offense has not been performing well recently, they just have been getting outplayed. Their offense has scored 11 runs in their last 3 games averaging almost 4 runs scored per game while they are allowing their opponents to score 19 runs against them in that same span allowing over 6 runs per game. They are coming off of a game where they just scored 7 runs and almost completed a large comeback but just fell short. They have the offense to do it in these last few games.

Giants vs Padres Prediction

The Padres are going to be desperate here and in every game they play for the rest of the season. They simply cannot lose anymore and need to win. The Giants big advantage over them is usually their pitching. With the starting pitchers being limited for options here on both sides, this is the chance for the Padres to get some wins here with their offense as the Giants should be looking to rest some of their better arms here with having clinched already. There is no real need for them to overwork any of their pitching staff so this is the perfect opportunity for the Padres to have a big offensive game with their hitters and get a must needed win here.

Players to Watch

San Francisco Giants: Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford are both players to watch in this game. They both pretty much lead every offensive category on the team. If the Giants are to pull off a big win here they will both be involved in some way for scoring.

San Diego Padres: Fernando Tatis Jr. is one player to watch in this game. He leads his team in OPS, home runs, and in stolen bases. He will need to give this offense a spark and help lead the way for his team to start piling the wins together. Look for him to make a big impact in this game.

Notable Quotes

"Last time while I was on the Zoom I said it was going to be the greatest comeback in San Diego history. I still believe it. The rest of those guys in the clubhouse still believe it. I was hoping it wouldn't go this way, but here we are." - Craig Stammen after his team almost completed a comeback down 8-4 to the Cardinals on Sunday.

"I feel like we've been playing great baseball, and (the Dodgers) have been matching us. That's annoying." - Kris Bryant showing his motivation to keep winning every game until the end of the season.
