Giants - Phillies preview and analysis

The San Francisco Giants may have gotten a win in regulation had Logan Webb gotten his complete game wish for. Instead, Kyle Schwarber decided to extend the game longer. But the Giants, after a rough weekend against the Cincinnati Reds, entered a series with the disappointing Philadelphia Phillies and started the series with a 5-4 win in 10 innings on Monday.

The series continues on Tuesday in Philadelphia, where right now Citizens Bank Park has become a shop of horrors for the home team, who are now seven games under .500 as we near the end of the month.

Curt Casali hit the eventual winning two-run home run in the 10th inning, and the Giants started this series strong with a victory and at least showed they're better than the Phillies for a day.

"Sometimes, what you are going through seems like the worst thing you've ever gone through," Phillies manager Joe Girardi said after his group lost for the 11th time in 15 games. "But you can probably look back and point to another spot. They just have to continue to work and grind this out. It's going to turn — it's going to. I believe in them."

The long ball was everyone's best friend on this day, with eight of the nine runs coming on homers. Each team had one in the ninth, especially with Corey Knebel giving one up to Evan Longoria in the top half of the ninth before Schwarber tied it. Knebel already gave up a tying blast on Sunday against the New York Mets.

"Eventually, we feel like we're going to get that one good pitch to hit and have that crooked inning," Giants manager Gabe Kapler said.

Despite giving up three home runs, Webb took a three-hitter into the ninth inning to go along with 10 strikeouts and no walks. He gave up the homer to Schwarber that prevented him from wanting the complete game. That was his 100th pitch of the game.

"I wanted it and I was pretty comfortable out there," Webb said. "I felt like it was my game."

One thing we can be sure on is the fact that the Giants are right in the middle of that pack of being good and being average. There are going to be nights where they look better than they should, and others where they should be beating teams out the woodshed, like the Reds.

But these are the Phillies, and we've talked at length about how bad they've been this year with no end in sight. And as far as I can tell, this group will continue to underperform and there's no reason why you should pick them for a majority of the games going forward. At least until they can show they can play up to their competition.

Prediction

I don't think we're going to get another game like Monday where we get nothing more than hitting homers. I think pitching is going to take over at some point where I believe it favors the Giants, and I think they take the second game of this one. Giants win 5-2
