Giants - Marlins preview and analysis
So, the good news for the Miami Marlins is their starting rotation has some really good guys at the top. Their bullpen? Yeesh. Elieser Hernandez should not be stuck as a long-relief option going forward because his outing was long but there was absolutely no relief.
Brandon Crawford hit a grand slam, and Mike Yastrzemski had a home run and double, which is really all the San Francisco Giants needed in a 15-6 win over the Marlins on Friday. The series continues Saturday with emerging star Pablo Lopez taking the mound for the Marlins.
Thankfully, at least, because I don't think the Marlins should put themselves in this position ever again. Because yikes.
The Giants hit five homers off the Marlins and that was all the Giants needed with their bullpen going five deep over the course of nine innings.
"I think we were just kind of relaxed. We had pressed a little bit the last two games, after being behind," Yastrzemski said. "Today we just had fun. We felt we were in a good rhythm."
Would you also believe me if I said Joc Pederson homered again? He's coming for Barry Bonds' record, I swear. He's got 13 homers this season and it feels like he's hit one every other game at this rate. How did you feel about facing old Elieser, buddy?
"No disrespect to the pitcher, but (Thursday) we faced a Cy Young-caliber pitcher that makes hitting a little bit harder," Pederson said. "We got a lot more pitches to hit that weren't 100 miles per hour. It makes the game a little bit easier."
"Nothing I can say, just terrible," Hernández said.
Well, that's one way to put it.
The Marlins clearly have a large dropoff after their two aces, and that's been one thing hindering them as they've progressed through this season. Funny enough, this group shouldn't be this good, but here they are, only eight games below .500 and playing much harder than many expected. They just need another bat and certainly another arm.
"It's encouraging. Any time you score a bunch of runs and have several big innings is another thing we believe leads to winning," Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. "It's a confidence boost for this club but again, but you're not going to get super high over this and super low over (Thursday's) loss."
Prediction
You should absolutely not expect the same result with Lopez taking the mound for this game. Lopez is no longer the ERA king on the Marlins after Sandy Alcantara's dominant outing on Thursday. I would like to think there is a friendly competition on who can be better, and I wonder if Lopez will come out and throw hard enough to keep this score low? I wouldn't go against either of these aces. Marlins win 6-3
