WOW!! Game 1 of this series was the real deal!  The National League has no bigger rivalry than the Giants vs the Dodgers! No bigger!  In Game 1 the Giants pulled ahead and the Dodgers had to stage a powerful comeback to win at home!  (just as I predicted in my preview) The Dodgers got the crazy win that included lots of fireworks from Mookie Betts!  And my wallet filled to the brim having cashed a “double bet”... meaning I bet $500 on a game if I am moved to bet… but on this game I laid $1000…. And I sweated the early Giants lead and nearly passed out with the massive Dodgers comeback.  The truth is that the Dodgers have an all-time roster.  A roster that could win games in any era against any team. Offense and defense.  Last season the Giants were better than the Dodgers… This season the Giants have collapsed.

A National League West Matchup between last season’s big dogs.  Last season’s top and tough teams that would go on to duel it out head to head for a trip to the World Series.  When the MLB nerdy brain trust got together to design a schedule that would maximize drama and ratings… It seemed completely natural.  “Let’s put the Giants against the Dodgers to start a 4-game series the first night we return from the All-Star break!!” they all shouted.  We always get a ratings boost the week after the All-Star game… so why not a great series with World Series implications to keep the good vibes going?!   What the nerds did not know is that the Giants would soon implode.  The Dodgers are still a great team with the World Series in their sites…. But the Giants are 12.5 games back for 3rd place behind the San Diego Padres… and that is after the Padres have gone through a drastic rough patch.  The Giants are missing some of their guys from last season to other teams… and a few of their key players to the injury list.  The resulting team doesn’t play with near the teamwork or urgency as last seasons club.  I can guarantee you right now that this iteration of the Giants will not come close to the 107 win season they had last year.  Meanwhile the Dodgers are more loaded than last season (with the addition of Freddie Freeman batting 3rd in the Line-up) and sitting atop the National League with a 60-30 record  and a clear path to yet another 100+ win season.

The Giants have won 7 of their last 10 games.  A wonderful turnaround for a team that has been languishing in third place in the NL West.  They are on a 3-game winning streak going into the All-Star break.  They went 1-3 against the Milwaukee Brewers, 2-1 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, and 2-1 against the San Diego Padres.  Beating the Padres only serves to help the Dodgers… The Giants are hoping to beat the Dodgers head to head to make up real ground in the NL West.

The Dodgers have won 9 of their last 10 games going into the All-Star break.  The Boys in Blue have found the next gear that will net them 100+ wins again this season.  They are on a 3-game winning streak going into the All-Star break.  They had six players play in the All-Star game for the National League.  They went 1-0 against the Los Angeles Angels, 2-1 against the St Louis Cardinals, 4-0 against the Chicago Cubs, and 2-0 against the Colorado Rockies.  The winning should be expected.  When you pitch to the Dodgers the first three batters are Mookie Betts, Trea Turner, and Freddie Freeman…. All guys who took cuts in the All-Star game… They are followed by 3 guys: Will Smith, Justin Turner, Max Muncy… who would bat 4th on 80% of the teams in all of MLB.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs Los Angeles Angels Prediction

Our prediction for Sunday July 24th is…  Dodgers 6 - Giants 3

The Dodgers have been trucking a 5-game win streak and the Giants are supplying no pitching to put that to an end. Bet the Dodgers on the moneyline.  Take the money.  It doesn’t pay what you want but is the most secure outcome.

(will update)

Key Injuries

Giants: SS Brandon Crawford (knee) Out ** 3B C Welker (shoulder) Out ** 2B T. La Stella (illness) Out ** C Curt Casali (oblique) Out **

Dodgers: LF Chris Taylor (Foot) Out ** 3B Edwin Rios (hamstring) Out

Players to Watch

Giants: LHP Logan Wood, 6-7, 4.20 ERA, 90 strikeouts in 90 innings pitched.  1.24 WHIP.  The 31 year old has been kicking around for 1080.1 innings pitched over 9 seasons.  He may have lost his stuff.  His junk may be crooked.  He doesn’t have it like he did but can sometimes get the job done?  Don’t ask me, but his numbers have tanked.

Dodgers: LHP Julio Urias, 8-6, 2.89 ERA, 94 strikeouts in 96 innings pitched.  1.02 WHIP.  The 25 year old Julio has been injected into Dodger pitching since 2016 when he was a teenage savant.  This year he is the Dodgers 5th best pitcher.  His future needs to go the way of his WHIP in order for Julio to finally become a Dodger Ace.  The numbers are better… control is better… speed is still there… The next jump is the GD record.

Starting Lineups

Giants: CF Austin Slater, DH Yermin Mercedes, 2B Wilmer Flores, 3B Evan Longoria, LF Joc Pederson, SS Thairo Estrada, RF Mike Yastremski, C Joey Bart, 1B LaMonte Wade Jr.

Dodgers: RF Mookie Betts, SS Trea Turner, 1B Freddie Freeman, DH Will Smith, 2B Max Muncy, 3B Justin Turner,. C Austin Barnes, LF Gavin Lux, CF Cody Bellinger

Managers

Giants: Gabe “ lots of work to get eyebrows this sculpted” Kapler
Dodgers: Dave “ get me more rings, Mookie” Roberts

Weather Forecast

Partly Cloudy, 85*, Humidity 54%, wind 7 mph, The Summer nights are beginning to hold the heat over Dodger Stadium… still it will cool to an amazing high 70’s at game time.  Give me french fries in a little helmet, ice cream in a little helmet, and let me catch a foul-ball in one of those little helmets.  Great matchup in great weather.
