Giants vs Rockies Preview and Analysis

Recent Form

The Giants are 6-4 over their last ten games.  They are a game up on the Los Angeles Dodgers and white knuckling the final 9 games of the season.  They could end up with the Dodgers overtaking them for 1st or they could hold them off… Those are the only outcomes that matter right now.  The logged 6 Overs and 4 Unders over that stretch.  They went 1-2 against the San Diego Padres, 2-1 against the Atlanta Braves, 2-1 against the San Diego Padres, and won the first game 1-0 against the Colorado Rockies Friday night.  They have won all season and to cap off this MLB season they need to keep winning for another week and a half.

The Colorado Rockies are also 6-4 over their last ten games. They are nowhere near a route to the MLB playoffs.  All the games left are for team building and pride.  They have no reason not to be excited about playing spoiler to the Giants… and will if they get the chance.  The notched 3 Overs, 5 Unders, and 2 Pushes during that stretch.  They beat the Philadelphia Phillies 1-0, swept the Atlanta Braves 2-0, went 2-1 against the Washington Nationals, 1-2 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, and 0-1 against the San Francisco Giants in game 1 of this series.

Offensive Analysis

The San Francisco Giants offense has been humming along all season.  They provide lots of run support.  They do it in a variety of ways but rely mostly on the two Brandons:  Brandon Crawford and Brandon Belt.  They are 6th in team ERA .249, 6th in runs scored 763, 2nd in home runs 234.  In nearly every category they are just behind the Dodgers, except for batting average where the Giants have the lead.  It should be an interesting next 9 games.

The Colorado Rockies are 7th in team batting average .248, 13th in runs scored 703, 22nd in home runs 175.  The roster lacks a dominant home run hitter.  C.J. Cron leads the squad in homers at 27… but he also leads the team in Batting Average .277, RBI 86, OBP .372.  CJ seems to do the majority of hitting with some help from the bearded wonder Charlie Blackmon (132 hits).  Plus it has been pointed out that the air at Coors Field is thin because of the altitude.  That is why this team has a winning record at home but are firmly in 4th place, with an overall losing record, far outside of playoff contention.  Their numbers are inflated at home and come crashing back down to earth on the road.

Defensive Analysis

The Giants pitching is great!  They are 2nd in team ERA 3.31 (just behind the Dodgers), 15th in strikeouts 1346, 2nd in WHIP 1.15 (just behind the Dodgers).  They are first in the best thing to be first in… They have given up the fewest walks all season 403… a full 62 better than the Dodgers.  The final 9 games will be a ride, strap in.

The Rockies pitching is not great… it’s far from great.  They are 24th in team ERA 4.76, 25th in strikeouts 1212, 23rd in WHIP 1.38.  Those would be good numbers if the league had 60 teams… but since there is only 30… The Rockies odds of winning are not great in  low scoring games.  The team practically needs basketball scores to get wins.

Players to Watch

The Giants will start Kevin Gausman, the right-hander is 14-6, 2.92 ERA, 211 SO in 179 IP.  The 30 year old leads the club in wins… hard to do teamed up with Anthony DeSclafani and Logan Webb, but he does it.

The Rockies will start Antonio Senzatela, also a righty, 4-9, 4.14 ERA, 103 strikeouts in 150 innings of work. The 26 year old has his ERA moving in the right direction this season, but still to high to be very effective. He got back from a rehab assignment on August 5th and before that had an assortment of maladies.  Numbers aside he still looks like a big kid with a strong arm.  Let’s see.
