San Francisco - Gonzaga preview, prediction and analysis

The West Coast Conference (WCC) semifinals on March 6, 2023, will feature two top teams going head-to-head: the Gonzaga Bulldogs and the San Francisco Dons.

Gonzaga, the top seed in the tournament and the 2nd ranked team in the nation, is looking to continue its dominance in the conference. The Bulldogs finished the regular season with an impressive 14-2 record in conference play and a 26.5 overall record. Head coach Mark Few has built Gonzaga into a national powerhouse, and the team is known for its high-powered offense, which averages a staggering 88 points per game.

Offensively, Gonzaga is led by star forward Drew Timme, who is averaging 20.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Timme is a skilled scorer who can dominate in the paint and stretch the floor with his shooting.

Gonzaga is coming off a 104-65 win over Chicago State in a good tune-up. Timme had 17 points to become the second highest scorer in program history.

“It hasn’t really hit me yet,” Timme said. “But it was pretty special, all the love and support. This place has been a great second home to me. When I first showed up I didn’t want to like it, but I ended up loving it.”

San Francisco, the fifth seed in the tournament, finished the regular season with a 10-8 record in conference play and a 19-11 overall record. The Dons are led by head coach Todd Golden, who is in his fourth season with the team and has quickly established San Francisco as a contender in the WCC. The team is known for its balanced offense and strong defense, which allows only 68.8 points per game.

Offensively, San Francisco is led by guard Khalil Shabazz, who is averaging 16.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game. Shabazz is a versatile player who can score from all areas of the court and is also an excellent defender.

The Dons are coming off an 80-63 win over Pacific, led by 25 points from Tyrell Roberts and overcame a bad 2 of 11 night from Shabazz.

Despite the regular season result, San Francisco will be looking to pull off an upset against the top-ranked Gonzaga team. The Dons will look to rely on their strong defense to slow down Gonzaga's high-powered offense, while also utilizing their balanced scoring attack to keep up with the Bulldogs.

However, Gonzaga will be looking to continue its dominance in the conference and assert its position as a top contender for the national championship. The Bulldogs have consistently shown throughout the season that they are a force to be reckoned with, and they will be looking to put on another dominant performance in the semifinals.

Overall, this semifinal matchup is sure to be an exciting game, with two top teams facing off for a chance to advance to the championship game. Gonzaga will be looking to continue its dominance in the WCC, while San Francisco will be looking to pull off an upset and cement itself as a contender in the conference. Regardless of the outcome, fans of college basketball are in for a treat with this matchup of two talented teams.
