Season Record

Padres: 4-1, 1st place NL West
Giants: 2-2, 3rd place NL West

An MLB National League West matchup.  The National League has opened the season all topsy-turvy.  The NL West was the class of Major League Baseball last season.  The Giants and Dodgers were both 100 win teams that really only had to worry about each other.  Their final matchup determined the World Series team for the NL.  The rest of the National League West were just some teams… just some guys.  The San Diego Padres, the Colorado Rockies, and the Arizona Diamondbacks were out of the picture.  This season has opened with the Padres in 1st place, the Rockies in 2nd… and the Diamondbacks still hopelessly in last place.  It is a long season, these standings will change… the Giants or the Dodgers will find themselves the ultimate winners of this game… but for the Padres it should be about sprinting to a big lead now… while the others are still toying with lineups and stretching in the outfield.

The San Diego Padres have won 4 of their last 5 games.  They had 1 Over and 4 Unders.  The Padres should be happy about getting wiins out of Al;ex Wood, Caleb Smith, Zach Davies, and Merrill Kelly… with a loss from Madison Bumgarner.  These pitchers will make up the bulk of their rotation all season given health.  The widely considered best of the bunch is Madison Bumgarner… so if they had to take an “L” the time to do it is ace against ace.  Madison will get wins… that is the plan and the reality.

The San Francisco Giants have won 2 of their first 4 games.  They have 1 Over and 4 Unders in that run.  They have wins from Logan Webb in the opener and Anthony DeSclafini in game 3.  They have losses by Carlos Rodon and Alex Wood.  It is a long season and these numbers will change.  Getting two wins in the opening 3 game series against the Miami Marlins helped kick it all off… but they NEED wins against the Padres… The Padres are in the division and actually affect the team’s Chi.  The Giants are currently suffering a rash of injuries to key guys.

Whether it's the SHORT (off a PERFECT 3-0 Monday sweep!) the MID (13-8, +$3,500 ALL plays L7 days!), or the LONG-TERM (SIZZLING 83-66, +$8,000 ALL picks s/ March 1st!), AAA Sports is "ON FIRE!" Now 8-4 (+$3,000) with ALL MLB this season! And looking back finds them on an ELECTRIC +$59K long-term NBA streak as well! The BIG TIME WINNING continues!..  Get AAA Sports’ picks all season!!… They are available right now at the Shop Picks page, where you can find all of the Best Bets from our champion sports handicappers.  Keep coming back to dominate these playoff games.

San Diego Padres vs San Francisco Giants Preview and Analysis

Offensive Analysis

The Padres are 10th in runs per game with 4.80, 10th in batting average with .256, and 5th in on base percentage with .35.  They will spend a lot of the season looking forward to the return of Fernando Tatis Jr… who will most likely boost the already hitting offense when he gets back from injury.

The Giants are 23rd in runs per game with 3.00, 20th in batting average with .213, and 21st in OBP with .292.  The hitting will get on track.  If last season’s Giants hit these numbers they would have jumped off the Golden State bridge.

Defensive Analysis

On Defense the Padres rank 4th in ERA, 7th in WHIP.  The pitchers are hot to start the year.  The 1st place start in errors given up with 0 should be very encouraging.  They are 10th in strikeouts per game with 8.40.  All of these numbers change, but the start highlights some strengths that any team would want to continue and build upon.

On Defense the Giants rank 10th in ERA with 3.16, 17th in WHIP.  The pitchers are not fully grinding yet.  Last season was perhaps the best mix of batting and pitching any team not to have made the World Series has ever had.  That is a lot to live up to… what we know is the defense MUST be better.  They are right now only 21st in strikeouts per game.

San Diego Padres vs San Francisco Giants Prediction

Our prediction for Wednesday April 13th is... Padres 5 Giants 3.

Finally an Over as the Padres get an easy win in the cold San Francisco air.  The Giants are waiting for the spark that created last season’s run.  They may not get it with the off-season losses and the slow start from the lineup.

Key Injuries

Padres: Fernando Tatis Jr SS (wrist) Out **

Giants: Evan Longoria 3B (finger) Out ** Tommy La Stella 2B (achilles) Out ** Lamonte Wade Jr (knee) LF Out **

Players to Watch

Padres: LHP Sean Manaea 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 7 SO.  Sean “the Manaealator” Manaea has a career 734 innings pitched with only 648 strikeouts.  Still his WHIP is 1.19 for career and the 30 year old is done with his youthful erratic approach to the strike zone.

Giants: Logan Webb 0-0. 1.50 ERA, 6 innings pitched this season with only 3 strikeouts.  The 25 year old is hoping for last season’s results.  Is he an “ace” for real or ready for the implosion that hits young pitchers?

Starting Lineups

Padres: CF Trent Grisham, C Austin ANola, 3B Manny Machado, 2B Jake Cronenworth, DH Luke Voit, RF Whit Meyers, 1B Eric Hosmer, LF Jurickson Profar, SS Ha-Seong Kim
Giants: RF Mike Yastrzemski, PH Austin Slater, 1B Brandon Belt, DH Darin Ruf, LF Joc Pederson, SS Brandon Crawford, 2B Thario Estrada, C Joey Bart, CF Steven Duggar, 3B Mauricio Dubon

Managers

Padres: Bob Melvin, Former Athletics manager now in year one with the San Diego Padres… he’s hoping one day to manage in the Bigs.

Giants: Gabe Kapler.  He won the NL manager of the year last season… but didn’t make the World Series.

Weather Forecast

57*. Chance of rain 64%. Partly Cloudy all day.  Winds at 16 mph.  A San Francisco Spring day.
