Season Record

Padres: 22-13, 2nd place NL West
Phillies: 17-18, 2nd place NL East

An MLB National League Matchup between the West and the East.  The West is much better than the East… for instance in the NL East the New York Mets are the only team with a winning record… All four others have losing records.  In the West the ALL FIVE teams DO NOT have losing records… even the 5th place Colorado Rockies are .500.  Yet individually the matchup is between the West’s San Diego Padres and the East’s Philadelphia Phillies.  Last season the San Diego Padres tried to cling to 3rd place in the NL West as the Giants and the Dodgers ran away with 100+ win seasons.  The Padres looked good for a while, but a late season swoon  turned their final record into a disappointment.  The Phillies seemingly never change… They are 17-18 at the moment and finished last season 82-80… just hanging on to 2nd place as no one cares.  So how are they this season?... Who do we bet on?  Let’s check the numbers.

The San Diego Padres have won 6 of their last 10 games.  They pulled in 6 Overs and 4 Unders during that stretch.  They went 2-1 against the Atlanta Braves, 1-2 against the Chicago Cubs, 3-1 against the Miami Marlins.  Last season the San Diego Padres were 14th in runs per game and 14th in team ERA, a sure recipe for mediocrity by the end.  This season they are scoring more runs per game… but pitching about the same if not a little worse at 16th in Team ERA… the scoring is the result of OBP as the batting average is a woeful 22nd in the league.

The Philadelphia Phillies have won 6 of their last 10 games.  They grabbed 6 Overs, 3 Unders, and 1 Push. They beat the Dodgers 3-1 in a four game series, they beat the Seattle Mariners 3-1 in a 4 games series, and got beat 2-1 in a 3 game series with the New York Mets.  The Phillies are smacking the ball pretty good.  It helps to have Bryce Harper in the lineup… but they have others as well.  The problem that keeps them a game under .500 is they have a weak pitching rotation.  The Phillies Injury List has a few key guys on it… plus Bryce Harper is listed as Questionable for Tuesday’s game with elbow soreness.

San Diego Padres vs Philadelphia Phillies Prediction

Our prediction for Tuesday May 17th is...  Padres 5 - Phillies 2

The secure bet is on the Padres.  Just because Bryce Harper may sit to rest that sore elbow.  The Padres have SS Fernando Tatis JR on the injured list… that has been an entire season thing.  It does not even out if Bryce sits.

MLB Betting Trends

Philly is 4-2 (+3.8 units) against San Diego over the last 3 seasons.
4 of 6 games in this matchup have gone under.
Against NL West opponents the Phillies have 9 Overs and 2 Unders this season.

Key Injuries

Padres: SS Fernando Tatis JR (wrist) Out ** LF M. Beaty (shoulder) Out **

Phillies: RF Bryce Harper (elbow) Quest ** SS Didi Gregorious (knee) Out ** CF Mickey Moniak (hand) Out

Players to Watch

Padres: RHP Mike Clevinger 0-0 5.00 ERA, 10 strikeouts in 9 innings.  This 31 year old has a career winning record of 44-23 and 613 strikeouts in 551.1 innings pitched.  Mike is a career bullpen guy that has had good results when he occasionally starts.  This start is all about the Padres trying to find an extra guy who can handle a spot in the rotation.

Phillies: The Phillies have not decided on a starting pitcher.  Their mound has been soft to say the least and they worked everyone hard when they had recent success against the Los Angeles Dodgers.   If you want to watch a player ?  Stick with LF Kyle Schwarber who will have to handle the big swings with Bryce Harper out.

Starting Lineups

Padres: SS Jake Cronenworth, 3B Ha-Seong Kim, 1B Eric Hosmer, DH Luke Voit, LF Jurickson Profar, RF Will Myers, 2B Robinson Cano, C Austin Nola, CF Trent Grisham

Phillies: 1B Rhys Hoskins, DH Alec Bohm, LF Kyle Schwarber, CF Roman Quinn, RF Nick Castellanos, 2B Jean Segura, LF Odubel Herrara, 3B Johan Carmargo, SS Bryson Stott

Managers

Padres: Bob Melvin
Phillies: Joe Girardi

Weather Forecast

Today there are severe thunderstorm warnings for Pennsylvania and the greater Philadelphia area.  Tomorrow the field will be soggy, but it should be sunny all day… Until game time… when again there will be a chance of showers.  It'll be a warm spring evening with temp around 78*... winds at 18 mph.
