Season Record

Padres: 61-48, 2nd place NL West
Dodgers: 73-33, 1st place NL West

The Dodgers won Game 1 of this series.  It was a silly 8-1 finish.  Dodger fans may be confused about not getting Juan Soto.  It seemed like a no-brainer… it wasn’t.  Getting Soto would have killed the chance to get Ohtani for Turner, Buehler and minor leaguers… which may happen soon.

A National League West Matchup between the #1 NL Westhome team and the #2 NL West visiting team.  The San Diego Padres descend on Dodger Stadium to find a Dodger team that just smoked the San Francisco Giants for the second series SWEEP in the last 30 days.  The Padres have an ace in the hole however… they just added the best hitter in the league in Juan Soto… and he still looks good at the plate despite the new uniform.  Many onlookers thought the Dodgers had the inside track on landing Juan (even though he replicates much of what Mookie Betts and Trea Turner already do for the Dodgers)... but when rumblings came out about two-way all-star Shohei Ohtani being available from the Angels… The Dodgers fiercely pulled back on Soto offers and the Padres landed him.  Soto fits the Padres well too.  He adds batting muscle next to Mannhy Machado… and both big boys will be anxiously awaiting the return of Fernando Tatis Jr to the line-up… when that happens the Padres will be a very hard line-up for any pitching staff to face.  (unless he comes back super rusty after missing the entire first ¾ of the season so far).  The Padres hate the Dodgers, the Dodgers hate the Padres…. This will be a fun series…. It is also a moment of desperation for the Padres… because it is in division any loss drops the Padres too much and any lift will lift them more than any normal win.  The Padres are still 12.5 games back of the Dodgers… but man oh man a few wins could change all of that!

The San Diego Padres have won 7 of their last 10 games.  Going 4-1 against the Colorado Rockies, 2-1 against the Minnesota Twins, and 1-1 against the Detroit Tigers during that stretch.  Juan Soto was not there for those wins… but he is certainly there now… He joins Manny Machado (19 homers) and Josh Bell (.400 BA).... and he brings his 1.25 OPS with him.  The middling offense will jump up a few spots easily… They just need the top-ten pitching staff to hold onto an 8th place ERA and 9th place WHIP to make real waves.  San Diego is 30-24 on the road.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are not scared of Juan Soto joining the Padres (they should be, but they are not)... any team facing the Dodgers must face the 2nd highest scoring line-up AND the #1 team ERA pitching staff.  That is 100% why this Dodger club is at 72 wins and still feels a bit sluggish.  They will hit 100+ wins for the season… you can and should put money on that.  The Dodgers are expecting to celebrate the entire month of August by welcoming stud pitcher after stud pitcher from the injury reserve list… while they are already the #1 pitching staff in the league… That is a great problem to navigate.  The best starters in the league will very soon have the best bullpen ever assembled.  May, Graterol, and Treinen would all be starters at 75%+ teams in the league… as the Dodgers finish August they will all be middle relievers.  The Dodgers have won 8 of their last 10 games.  They are in the midst of a 5 game win streak (4 straight against the San Francisco Giants, a better offense than the Padres).  They Swept the Giants 4-0, They went 3-1 against the Colorado Rockies, and 1-1 against the Washington National (the last time they faced Soto, except Friday night which is Game 1 of this series) during that stretch.  Wining is the name of the game in LA where the Dodgers are 35-15.
