Iowa: 4-4 conf, 14-5 overall (Big Ten)

The Purdue Boilermakers roll into Iowa City for a rematch of the Big Ten opener.  Purdue beat Iowa then and will again now.  The Boilermakers are ranked.  The Boilermakers did not lose to Rutgers.  The Boilermakers don’t worry about Iowa.  Iowa on the other hand has a fun team.  They have a hustle team.  The Hawkeyes have a team that scores almost as much as Purdue.  The Hawkeyes won't win this one… but will they cover? is a real question.

The Boilermakers have won 8 of their last ten games.  They stumbled against the Wisconsin Badgers and the Indiana Hoosiers.  This good team (Purdue) is a lousy 4-6 ATS over their last ten games.  They suffer from the disease of “overspreading”.  7 of their last 10 games have had spreads in the double digits.  The problem of course is coaches don’t coach to the spread and players don’t play to the spread.  Purdue has something 99% of college basketball teams do not… a 7’4 center, Canadien Zach Edey.. The Sophomore is good for 15 ppg, 8 rbs, and 1.3 blocks.  He should have more blocks that is for sure… still it is a deciding advantage to have a guy in the middle altering shots.

Iowa has won 3 of their last 5 games.  They dropped a close one… maybe an unforgivable one to Rutgers and before that they  lost to the Wisconsin Badgers, but that is going around… everyone seems to be losing to Wisconsin. Sadly Iowa also lost to Iowa State way back on December 9th. They have 7 wins over their last ten games.  The Haweyes have a strong team led by 6’8 Forward Keegan Murray who is pouring in 22.8 ppg and 8.4 rebounds. Junior point guard Joe Toussaint does enough dirty work to lead the team in assists and steals.

Purdue Boilermakers vs Iowa Hawkeyes Preview and Analysis

RECENT FORM

Purdue is 16-3 on the season, but 10 and 9 ATS.  They have logged 11 Overs and 8 Unders.  They are 2-2 in road games.

Iowa is 14-5 on the season, but 12-7 ATS.  They have notched 13 Overs, 5 Unders, and 1 Push.  They are 11-1 in home games.

OFFENSIVE ANALYSIS

Purdue is 4th in the nation in scoring with 84.7 ppg, 16th in rebounds with 37.6 per game, and 11th in AST/To ratio with 1.5.  Purdue shoots the flights out!  They are 4trh in FG% and 5th in 3Pt%... they shoot 72.1% from the free throw line.  They are OK on defense where they rank 142nd while giving up 67.4 ppg.  The defensive rank could be higher if they weren’t so tempted to turn every game into a track meet.

Iowa is 5th in scoring with 83.1 ppg, 109th in rebounds with 33.9 per game, and 2nd in AST/TO ratio with 1.8.  They are shooting 70th in FG%, 179th in 3PT%, and 35th from the free throw line. Iowa is slightly worse on defense as they are ranked 200th while allowing 69.4 ppg from opponents.

Purdue Boilermakers vs Iowa Hawkeyes Prediction

Our prediction for Thursday, January 27th is…  Purdue 88 - Iowa 78

Purdue will score more.  It’s that simple.  The Iowa defense will be unable to stop a team that shoots and rebounds this well.  Iowa can score themselves and have the home court advantage… but none of that will deter from getting a ten point win.  Bet Purdue and/or the over.  That is what the numbers are saying will happen.
