Pittsburgh Vs Georgia Tech Preview and Analysis.

RECENT FORM

Pitt opened by winning a blowout over UMass 51-7, Then they beat Tennessee 41-34, then they got beat by Western Michigan 44-41, the fourth game was a blowout win of epic proportions over New Hampshire 77-7.

Georgia Tech opened with a tight loss to Northern Illinois 22-21, then a big win over Kennesaw State 45-17, then they played Clemson hard all the way through a loss 14-8… last game was a win over UNC 45-22.  These results make little sense.  How can a team hold Clemson to 14 points, but give up 17 points to Kennesaw State?  How can GT lose to Northern Illinois yet score 45 on UNC?  Are they playing up or down to the level of competition?

Offensive Analysis

The Pittsburgh Panthers are experiencing an offensive explosion!  They have not scored less than 41 points in any of the four games they have played.  They are averaging 52.5 points a games on 552.5 yards a game.  Football numerology will tell you that if both those numbers start in “5” you have a rockin’ offense. Quarterback Kenny Pickett is throwing the ball with a 74.2% completion rate.  RB Vincent Davis has been almost forgotten about with the ball being chucked around the yard all September long. With 16 passing touchdowns and only one interception and a screaming #2 ranked FBS offense, the Pirates might never run the ball.  Opponents have to try to shut down 5 dynamic receivers:  Jordan Addison (407 yards), Jared Wayne (211 yards), Taysir Mack (183 yards), Lucas Krull (148 yards), Jaylon Barden (140 yards).  Almost every opponents passing defense will look overmatched in Pittsburgh’s games.

Yellow Jackets games are less about Georgia Tech being great at passing or rushing as they are about the matchup.  Georgia Tech is scoring 29.8 points per game on 383.3 yards per game. QB Jordan Yates is completing 64.2% of his passes for 5 TDs and 1 interception.  He has been sacked 10 times, but most of those were against #6 Clemson.  Jahmyr Gibbs is a strong, reliable running back averaging 4.7 yards per carry.  Wide Receivers Kyric McGowan and Malachi Carter are a true dual threat in the passing attack.  When they are lined up on opposite sides the defensive coordinators have to pick their poison.

Defensive Analysis

Pittsburgh ranks 40th in defense in the FBS. They give up 315 ypg and a total of 12 touchdowns in 4 games.  The offensive stats are through the roof, but the defense is holding their own. The takeaways are building with 2 interceptions and 4 fumble recoveries.  The D-Line is hell-bent on extermination of the opponent by going after the nest… They are in the top ten in sacks with a team total of 16.

The Yellow Jackets defense is ranked slightly higher at #35 in the FBS, allowing only 306.2 yards per game. They’ve had only 11 sacks through the first four games, but play pretty solid run defense and get lots of pressure in the backfield.
