Phillies - Mariners preview and analysis

Two teams that really should not be struggling as much as they are, but a good chance for the Philadelphia Phillies and Seattle Mariners to get a win streak going and help some fanbases pull away from the deep end.

Both teams are coming off doubleheaders on Sunday, part of a league-wide ridiculousness that involved a bunch of weather delays that made it horrible yet hilarious.

The Phillies are coming off a split against the New York Mets, and overall losing two of three, to the NL East leaders. The last time they played before the delay, the Mets scored seven times in the ninth inning to win 8-7 and just send the Phillies into ultimate obscurity.

The good news is Philadelphia actually handed Max Scherzer his first loss of the season. Bryce Harper took Scherzer deep in the 3-2 win, but Pete Alonso got his revenge with two homers in the nightcap.

"I thought we played well the first game and the second game got away from us," Harper said.

For the Phillies to rebound after that abysmal loss last week was great for their momentum. There's still some serious problems. The top of the rotation hasn't been good, the middle of the lineup has been a major disappointment. Baby steps, or something like that.

"I think we needed that," Phillies starter Kyle Gibson said. "For the offense to come out and do what they did against Max was big."

The Mariners didn't deal with such a weather problem, but they are coming off a 2-1 win in the series finale over the Tampa Bay Rays to end their six-game losing streak. Abraham Toro hit the game-tying homer in the bottom of the ninth, and Ty France drove the winning run home. So clearly this could've happened and turned horribly.

"We can definitely catch our breath now," France said. "It's been a rough week."

The Mariners definitely have been a shocker to starting off this slow. Seattle was expected to run away with the American League West, but the M's have found themselves falling short a little bit here. There's plenty of time to get this right, but it's been a bit wild.

"I'll be honest, I thought they were going to load the bases," France said. "I wasn't expecting them to walk Fraz to start. But after that, I thought they're going to load the bases, and it's a good thing they didn't."

Seattle's offense also has been a problem. During its six-game losing streak, the Mariners scored two runs or fewer four times. Even if you add the two runs scored against Tampa on Sunday, that's five times. That's not good enough. This offense should be killing it, more than France and J.P. Crawford. They need more pop in the batting order.

Prediction

I don't trust the road team flying across the country off a doubleheader and still finding a way to lose. Seattle is the more rested team, and I think the Mariners can find a way to get the bats going against Ranger Suarez. Mariners win 6-2
