Phillies - Mariners preview and analysis

What Tuesday's win for the Seattle Mariners reminded everyone is that Seattle still has Robbie Ray and 29 other teams do not. The reigning AL Cy Young winner struck out 10 in 5.2 innings to help lead the Mariners to a 5-4 win over the struggling Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday.

With a win apiece between these two teams, the series finale takes place Wednesday at T-Mobile Park, and a day game favors the home team usually in these instances. But so does having Logan Gilbert take the mound for Seattle.

But first, we need to discuss Ray. He hasn't had a great start to his Seattle tenure, but that performance against Philadelphia is a reminder what can be done. We've already seen what Gilbert is doing with Seattle right now. If Ray can get things rolling, along with Chris Flexen, one can only imagine what this Seattle rotation can become.

"I definitely felt like everything was clicking tonight," Ray said. "There's still work to be done, but I felt like this was a really, really good step in the right direction."

Ray threw four perfect innings but ran into trouble in the fifth. He gave up Nick Castellanos' leadoff homer and struggled with his control as Jean Segura scored on a walk and a pair of wild pitches.

Ray gave up a second walk and only got out of the inning when catcher Luis Torrens threw out Matt Vierling on a third-strike wild pitch that went to the backstop.

Outside of that, Ray was tremendous in that start and that has to be good for a Mariners team trying to find an identity.

"I thought it was one of his better games he's had so far as a Mariner," manager Scott Servais said. "Really sharp. The fastball had really good life up in the zone, and that's where he's at his best. Fastball at the top and slider down below."

Now, while we can look at Ray and say this was a tremendous effort, I can't say that with a straight face because the Phillies have been just as terrible as of late. And if they can't hit off run-of-the-mill pitchers, how can anyone expect them to hit off a Cy Young winner?

Aaron Nola on the other end struck out six, but ran into trouble with giving up multiple infield singles.

“It was a weird game, especially the first two innings,” Nola said. “It’s baseball, and they hit the ball in perfect spots, and we weren’t. I can’t really do nothing about it, I just try to control what I can control tonight. Tough loss.”

Prediction

Not really expecting much from the Philadelphia contingent with how dominant Gilbert has been. At home, especially, this is going to be a big-time outing from Seattle's ace. Mariners win 6-3
