76ers - Knicks preview and analysis

Recent form
76ers: won 115-103 at Thunder on Sunday
Knicks: lost 110-104 vs. Magic on Sunday

The New York Knicks fell into that home-and-home trap that we 100 percent did not expect last week. After manhandling the Orlando Magic on Friday, the youthful Orlando squad came back to knock off the Magic at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.

Terrence Ross says you’re welcome, Knicks fans.

The Knicks will return to the court Tuesday and try to bounce back from that loss to Orlando when they welcome the Philadelphia 76ers to MSG on Tuesday.

Sunday was a reminder of a couple of things: 1) The Knicks are going to have to continue through growing pains as they find their way through the weeds in order to be a solid championship contender. And 2) Ross had zero points through three quarters. He finished the game with 22.

The Magic outscored the Knicks 36-24 in the fourth quarter and showed a lot of grit for Magic coach Jamahl Mosley’s first win as Orlando coach.

"They just played harder than us," all-star Julius Randle said.

Randle posted a double-double of 30 points and 16 rebounds, but it took 24 shots to get to that 30-point mark and he took *cleans glasses* 12 3-pointers to only make two. He did make 12 of 14 from the free-throw line, but that was not a sound shooting night for the Knicks’ best player.

Derrick Rose had 23 points off the bench, but no one else really made a noteworthy impact on that game. Evan Fournier was held to 3 of 11 from the floor; RJ Barrett was 5 of 17; and Alec Burks was 3 of 10 off the bench.

For a Magic team to shoot 40 percent and still win, that says a lot for how much the Knicks took their foot off the pedal in that second end of the home-and-home.

And now the Knicks get a good Sixers team coming into town that has looked decent minus Ben Simmons through three games. Philadelphia is coming off a 12-point win at the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday where all five starters were in double figures, led by a team-high 28 points from Seth Curry. All-Star Joel Embiid had 22 points to go with nine rebounds and six assists, and another 14 points for Tobias Harris.

Curry went 6 of 7 from 3-point range in the first quarter to jump out to a 36-26 lead in Oklahoma City.

"I was getting good shots," Curry said. "It wasn't like I was 18 dribbles, half-court, 40-footers. It wasn't like I was on a Steph-type streak. I was finding good shots."

One thing you can expect is a defensive battle. Even though Simmons isn’t in the lineup, and likely won’t be going forward, you’ll see Matisse Thybulle more active defensively against the likes of Kemba Walker or RJ Barrett. I wonder how much there will be a matchup between Embiid and Randle, because Harris would get eaten alive on the drive-and-kick game of Randle. Simmons would normally take that matchup.

When Tuesday night rolls around, this October matchup is going to be telling for many things. Exploiting the matchups will be one of them.

Prediction

Mitchell Robinson will likely draw the assignment of slowing down Embiid. The one thing that I’ve noted early is how Embiid is being held off the glass more to start. I wonder if that’s a matchup deal, or just the way the game is rolling. We’ll see how Robinson looks there and if he can win the battle of the boards. Overall, I like the Sixers to make enough stops to get a win here. 76ers by 5
