Magic vs Bucks preview and analysis

Recent form
Magic: lost five of six
Bucks: won three straight

The defending champion Milwaukee Bucks and Orlando Magic will play the second of a two-game set at Fiserv Forum on Monday.

The Buc took the first matchup on Saturday in a 9-point victory at Fiserv Forum behind a performance highly expected from Giannis Antetokounmpo. The two-time MVP and reigning Finals MVP had 32 points to go with 20 rebounds, five assists and three blocks.

Antetokounmpo went 8 of 16 from the floor but got the bulk of his work done from the free-throw line going 15 of 23 from the charity stripe. The defending champs found themselves over .500 for the first time since Oct. 27 while dealing with a rash of injuries and COVID protocol.

"We're getting better. We're competing," Antetokounmpo said.

Milwaukee had been without Khris Middleton (COVID) and Jrue Holiday (injury). Their returns have certainly sparked this three-game winning streak, and center Brook Lopez’s return could be on the horizon; Milwaukee has certainly missed its anchor in the middle despite valiant play from Bobby Portis being a fill-in center.

Portis is no slouch, however. He had 24 points and 15 rebounds on 8 of 11 shooting while making six 3-pointers. That’s not a bad stretch five to have with the ability to play a deadly outside game.

But the Magic and coach Jamahl Mosley hung around in that game more than they should’ve. Orlando was down young star guard and leading scorer Cole Anthony with an ankle injury; his replacement, veteran Gary Harris, is now questionable heading into this game with a hand injury.

Despite being shorthanded, the Magic outscored Milwaukee 37-21 in the fourth quarter and was able to cut the lead to single digits. R.J. Hampton led the way off the bench with 19 points on five made threes, and Jalen Suggs also had 14 points and six rebounds in 25 minutes.

"I think our team just kind of gets relaxed and thinks the game is over," Portis said. "At lot of these teams play hard until the last second. We've got to do a better job of cleaning up the turnovers and taking quality shots down the stretch."

Prediction

The Bucks have won the last eight meetings and before Saturday’s tipoff, had done it all by double digits. In addition to that, the Bucks have dominated the rebounding battle against Orlando. The last three have all had double-digit discrepancy, including Saturday’s game at a 60-39 advantage; easy to do when your best player grabs one-third of those. Either way, Milwaukee gets it done, but the Magic barely cover. Bucks by 10

Betting trends

The Bucks are 0-5 ATS in their last five.

The Bucks are 0-4 ATS when the opponent scores 100 or more the previous game.

The Magic are 4-1 ATS in their last five on the road.

The under is 10-2 in the last 12 meetings in Milwaukee.

The Magic are 2-5-1 ATS in the last eight meetings.
