A battle of the big birds in the NFC West!  Seahawks vs Cardinals in what is shaping up to be a wild NFC West season.  The Seattle Seahawks just months since getting rid of QB Russell Wilson for players and picks… have seemingly struck gold with Geno Smith under center!  Yes THAT Geno Smith… the draft bust turned journeyman turned veteran backup… turned late in the game star! Geno Smith isn’t the league leader in anything but he does have 1924 passing yards through 8 games and is currently guiding a team with a winning record that was projected to finish last in the division if not the league.  The Arizona Cardinals still have football’s smallest 46 million dollar a year player in QB Kyler Murray.  I would not normally mention a player’s salary UNLESS it is still close to the start of that deal… AND the team is not living up to the expectations that came with the signing of that deal.  Kyler is a good quarterback… don’t get that wrong.  The guy has 1993 passing yards and 299 rushing yards through 8 games… only the record is 3-5.  Seattle is getting a better return on Geno Smith’s 3.5 million dollar deal.  Still Kyler has had a few disadvantages… like his star WR DeAndre Hopkins missing 6 games from a suspension for Performance enhancing drugs found in a urine test.  Or RB James Connor, one of the toughest men in football, going down with a rib injury and missing 3 games so far.  Or Kyler is 5’9 in shoes and simply can’t see over his own offensive line let alone defenders coming at him with their hands up.  Where is the great betting opportunity?... And why are the Cardinals favored when they have the worst NFC West record?

The Seattle Seahawks are currently on a 3-game win streak AND a 3 win ATS streak.  They last beat the New York Giants 27-13. In that game the Seahawks lead the Giants in passing yards, yards per run (though neither team did great in the running game), in red zone efficiency… The Seahawks won the turnover battle, the first down battle, and of course scored more points. QB Geno Smith completed 23 of 34 for 212 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Not spectacular, but he never had to be… oh and by the way… The Giants are good this season. Seattle has several defensive weaknesses but make up for it by simply scoring points… They are 4th in the league in scoring.

The Arizona Cardinals are favored in this game because they are at home… AND WR Deanrde Hopkins will make his return from suspension.  QB Kyler Murray will have his favorite and most talented receiver back on the field.  That will be a big boost.  For Kyler and the team. The Cardinals could be kryptonite for the Seahawks because while they don’t score as well… they are slightly better in every defensive category and those scoring numbers have been compiled while DeAndre Hopkins was chillin’ at home.  Of course Devil’s advocate will wonder if De'Andre will have the same explosion he had when we last saw him play.  Six weeks is a short time but he will now be (presumably) clean of performance enhancing drugs.. He will be six weeks of not running reps with Kyler in game situations.. He will be six weeks behind any wrinkles put in by Coach Kingsbury and Kyler Murray during those long homework sessions Kyler likes to put in.

The Cardinals are 15th in scoring with 22.8 points per game, 12th in total yards with 347.1 yards per game, 13th in passing yards with 230.8 per game, and 17th in rushing yards with 116.4 per game.

Seattle’s defense is 27th in defense of total yards with 377.4 per game, 21st in defense of passing yards with 236.6 allowed per game, 28th in defense of rushing yards with 140.8 allowed per game, and 26th in defense of points with 24.9 per game allowed.  The oddity of these bad numbers is that except for a loss to the San Francisco 49ers.. Seattle has never been out of a game.  They either win or come darn close!

Arizona’s defense is 22nd in defense of total yards with 362.4 allowed per game, 23rd in defense of passing yards with 252.3 allowed per game, 13th in defense of rushing yards with 110.1 allowed per game, and 30th in defense of total points with 26.3 allowed per game.

Our prediction for Sunday, November 6th is… Seattle 27 - Arizona 21

 

Bet on the Seahawks.  Arizona’s problems are deeper than just adding DeAndre Hopkins… they have lineman and key defenders on the injury list… and Kyler has a tendency to do too much.. While Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury has shown no ability to get Kyler to adjust to any in-game changes.
