Season Record

Chargers: 5-4, 2nd place AFC West

An AFC West battle we have all been waiting for.  This season is the first in NFL history that will require each team to navigate a 17 game schedule before the playoffs start, for several teams like the Steelers and Texans that just means an extra loss in the history books… But for teams like the Chiefs and the Chargers… That means an extra game to stuff the stats and set some records.  The Chiefs are often cited as the obvious Super Bowl favorite in the league despite having not gotten another trophy since their first of the Patrick Mahomes era 3 seasons ago in 2020.  The Chiefs have also lost one since.  Still 2022-23 means another shot for QB Patrick Mahomes to put his stamp on this decade.  The Los Angeles Chargers have a quarterback that wants a similar impact to Patrick Mahomes because he has similar talents.  Chargers QB Justin Herbert has a huge arm and some leadership ability… not to mention the fun intangibles of creativity and big pass ability.  The Chargers started the season shaky to say the least… They also have been badly bit by the injury bug.  Still they have won 4 of their last 6 games to lift them to a winning record and give them a shot at attacking the next 8 games with an eye toward the postseason.  The Great Betting Opportunity here depends on whether you think the spread is too small given the Chiefs talents… or whether you think the Chargers have what it takes to win outright.?

The Kansas City Chiefs are a pure offensive juggernaut… even after losing their best receiver and possibly the league’s best receiver in the offseason.  The Chiefs lead the league in points per game and in passing yards per game.  That is all Patrick Mahomes.  They are on a 3-game winning streak… They are 7-2 on the season, but… but?  They are only 3-5-1 ATS.  The Chiefs won their last game over the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-17… resulting in a PUSH because of the 10 point spread.  Patrick Mahomes went 26 of 35 passing for 331 yards, 4 TDs, and 1 INT.  He hit everybody… Kelce for 88 yards, Scantling for 60 yards, Toney for 57 yards, McKinnon for 56 yards, Schuster for 33 yards… And 4 other receivers got a touch too.  The running game in Kansas City is not the strongest with Pacheco carrying 16 times for 82 yards and Mahomes scrambles being the second best thing for 39 yards.  The run in KC simply supports the pass… it keeps the corners and linebackers honest.

The Los Angeles Chargers lost their last game to the San Francisco 49ers 22-16.  The Chargers do not have very impressive numbers on offense OR on defense.  Still the talking heads and the constantly disappointed fan base keep pointing to the injury absences as the main excuse for the average to below average everything.  The Chargers have been missing WR Mike Williams and LB Joey Bosa… probably the top weapon on each side of the ball… Their eventual return will be the debut of a much better team… but when will that happen? In the loss QB Justin Herbert was 21 of 35 for 196 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT.  RB Austin Ekeler came up empty with only 24 yards on six carries…his 7 receptions for 39 yards technically makes him productive… but much much more is needed for wins in the NFL.

Kansas City Chiefs VS Los Angeles Chargers Prediction

Our prediction for Sunday, November 20th is… Chiefs 30 - Chargers 20

Bet on the Chiefs ATS.  The Chargers are still hobbled across the board… and hopefully the Chiefs understand that they CAN run against the Chargers to keep Justin Herbert off the field through time of possession.  It should be easy.
